HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana completed a sweep of its nonconference series with Troy, wiping out an early deficit to defeat the Trojans, 4-2, Sunday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
The Lions (7-4) won the opener, 7-2, and claimed the series Saturday with a 7-1 win over Troy.
As they had done throughout the series, the Trojans (7-5) struck first. Putting together three singles in the second inning off freshman right-hander
Brennan Stuprich, Troy picked up a run to take the lead.
In the fourth, the leadoff hitter Caleb Bartolero reached on a fielding error and advanced to second base on a single. Following a sacrifice bunt, Bartolero scored on Nic Nolan's second RBI single of the game.
The Lions answered in the bottom of the inning.
Preston Faulkner ripped a one-out double to center field. After
Christian Garcia was hit by a pitch and
Eli Johnson worked a walk, Faulkner scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Gaby Cruz.
Kyle Flettrich took over on the mound in the sixth inning, tossing a scoreless inning in relief.
Faulker tied up the game in the sixth, launching his first home run of the season to lead off the inning.
Southeastern handed
Noah Hughes the ball in the seventh and the redshirt senior from Ridgeland, Mississippi shut down the Trojan bats the rest of the way.
Nick Ray led off the bottom of the seventh with a double, and after being sacrificed to third, scored on a fielding error by the shortstop to give the Lions their first lead of the game.
In the eighth, Garcia and Johnson ripped back-to-back singles with one out to chase reliever Lance Johnson from the game. Cruz greeted the new Troy hurler, Mason Kenney, with an RBI single to center field to score Garcia with an insurance run.
Hughes (1-0) earned the win, scattering one hit and one walk in three scoreless innings. He struck out three. Marquez Oates (1-1), who allowed one run in one-third of an inning, was tagged with the loss.
Stuprich, who did not factor in the decision, allowed two runs – one earned – in his first collegiate start. The freshman from Metairie, Louisiana surrendered six hits in five innings pitched. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter.
