SLU Duo Tabbed Conference Players of the Week

HAMMOND, La. – Following a pair of shutouts last weekend, Dalton Fish and Nadine Maher both earned Southland Conference Players of the Week Honors for the Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team, the league office announced Tuesday.

The duo helped the Lady Lions (3-2-3 Southland) battle to a pair of scoreless ties on the road Friday at UIW and Sunday at Abilene Christian. The SLU defense, led by Fish and Maher, faced 40 shots in the two matches but refused to break.

Fish, a junior, played all 220 minutes on the weekend in route to being named Defensive Player of the Week. The Pflugerville, Texas native led the SLU backline that blocked 14 shots in the tie Saturday against ACU. A Hendrickson High grad, Fish has shown remarkable durability throughout the season playing in 806 of the 826 minutes the Lady Lions have played.

"Dalton's defensive skill sets have been a great asset this year," said fourth-year SLU soccer head coach Chris McBride. "Going back to the first game of the season, she has made some really important tackles when the game was on the line. This weekend I felt she did a great job of winning the aerial balls and stopping a lot of attacks on the top of the box. She's done an amazing job all year of protecting the box."

Maher, out of Dublin, Ireland, saved 12 shots in the two matches including several game savers in overtime. The senior recorded her second and third shutouts of the season to tab the Southland Goalkeeper of the Week honor.

"Nadine has been incredible all year for us," said McBride. "She's made some incredible saves in previous games this year to keep us in matches. She made some really important saves this weekend and did a great job of commanding her box. It's great to see her get some recognition from the conference this weekend after back-to-back shut outs on the road."

Tuesday's announcement marks the first time since Oct. 3, 2016 (Vanessa Arzaluz, Maggie Ramsey) where the Lady Lions had multiple conference Players of the Week in the same week.

Fish, Maher and the Lady Lions return to action Thursday at 7 p.m. when they host Houston Baptist to begin a three-game homestand to wrap up the regular season.
