HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana's
Kailin Newsome was named the 2020 Southland Conference Volleyball Freshman of the Year and
Jeremy White was named the Katrinka Jo Crawford Coach of the Year, the league office announced Tuesday. All Southland superlative honors are presented by Ready Nutrition.
The Lady Lions also placed pair of players on the Southland's All-Conference teams with Newsome earning first-team honors and
Crispin Adams earning third-team honors.
After being selected to finish seventh in preseason polls, White steered his team to a 9-3 conference record and the No. 3 seed at the Southland Tournament, the program's highest tournament-seeding position since joining the conference. The Lady Lions, 11-4 overall, are guaranteed their first winning season since 2002 and knocked off first-place Stephen F. Austin earlier this month, snapping their 42-match Southland regular-season winning streak.
Newsome made an immediate impact for Southeastern. The freshman from Houston, Texas pushed the Lady Lions to the tournament's No. 3 seed on the way to earning her postseason honors. Newsome has been an explosive component of the potent Southeastern Louisiana offense, leading the circuit in overall kills (261) while ranking second in kills per set (4.14) and points (280.5). She has recorded double-doubles in each of her last 10 matches and has 11 overall this season.
Adams came on strong in the season's final month, posting double-digit kills against Central Arkansas and first-place SFA. The middle blocker from Brookshire, Texas, who posted the highest attack percentage by a Lady Lion this season (.263), was on fire in March with a .351 attack percentage and averaged 1.81 kills per set. For the season, she hit .263 while averaging 1.47 kills and 0.75 blocks per set.

Southeastern is the No. 3 seed in the 2020-21 Southland Conference Volleyball Tournament. Scheduled to run March 31-April 3, the tournament is being held at the Dugan Wellness Center on the campus of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The top eight teams in the Southland will qualify with the top four seeds drawing a first-round bye and the top two seeds drawing a bye directly into the semifinals.
The Lady Lions received a first-round bye and will face the winner of No. 6 seed Central Arkansas and No. 7 seed Abilene Christian at 4 p.m. Thursday on ESPN+. The winner of that match will advance to face No. 2 seed Sam Houston at 12 p.m. Friday for the right to advance to Saturday's championship game.
