HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana opens the road portion of its Southland Conference schedule this weekend with a four-game series against Incarnate Word at Sullivan Field, sponsored by HEB, in San Antonio, Texas.
The first-place Lions (11-5, 4-0 Southland), who had their eight-game winning streak snapped Tuesday at No. 10-ranked LSU, swept conference preseason-favorite Sam Houston during the opening weekend of Southland action. While not ranked, Southeastern is among those receiving votes in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) poll this week.
Friday and Sunday's games against UIW (5-4, 2-2 Southland) can be heard in the Hammond area on the flagship station of the Southeastern Sports Radio Network – KSLU 90.9 FM – in addition to online at www.LionSports.net/ListenLive and via both the Lions Gameday Experience and TuneIn Radio apps.
Other options to follow the action this weekend include live statistics, the @LionUpBaseball Twitter account or UIW's video stream (Friday and Sunday only). Links to audio, video and stats are available on the baseball schedule page at www.LionSports.net.
Southeastern enters the game leading the nation with 13 sacrifice flies along with ranking second nationally in HBPs (37), sixth in runs scored (142), eighth in on-base percentage (.440) and ninth in double plays turned (15).
Jacob Burke, a freshman from St. Francisville, Louisiana, paces the Lion offense with a .382 batting average. He leads the Southland in runs scored (21), RBIs (19) and stolen bases (10). Burke is one of five everyday players in the Southeastern lineup hitting .300 or better, including
Evan Keller (.354),
Christian Garcia (.352),
Preston Faulkner (.350) and
Gaby Cruz (.310).
Freshman right-hander
Will Kinzeler (2-1, 3.38) takes the ball for Southeastern Friday against sophomore left-hander Carson Rollins (1-1, 4.50). Right-hander
Will Warren (3-0, 0.69) heads to the bump Saturday for the Lions opposite sophomore right-hander Isaiah Zavala (2-0, 1.59). Neither team has announced a starting pitcher for the second half of Saturday's doubleheader. The Cardinals are also undecided on a starter for Sunday's series finale while Southeastern plans to start freshman right-hander
Brennan Stuprich (1-0, 2.25).
Wilson Ehrhardt (.353, 2 HR, 9 RBI) and Ryan Flores (.313, 2 HR, 14 RBI) are the Cardinals' leading hitters. Jordan McFarland has hit a team-best three home runs and Zach Limas owns half of UIW's six stolen bases.
The Cardinals split a four-game series this past weekend at Northwestern State, sweeping the Saturday doubleheader, 2-1 and 3-2, while dropping the Friday opener, 6-5, and Sunday's series finale, 5-4.
