Southeastern (3-0) is coming off an Opening Weekend sweep of Mississippi Valley State during which it tied the program record for runs scored in a single game, set the record for runs scored in consecutive games and marked the first time in program history the Lions opened a season by tossing back-to-back-to-back shutouts.
Following the weekend, Southeastern led the nation in 14 statistical categories – Win-Loss Percentage (1.000), Scoring (22.0 runs per game), Batting Average (.487), On-Base Percentage (.594), Runs Scored (66), Hits (57), Doubles (13), Walks (31), HBPs (13), Sacrifice Flies (9), Stolen Bases (14), ERA (0.00), Shutouts (3) and Hits Allowed per 9 Innings (3.00).
Redshirt freshman second baseman
Champ Artigues leads Southeastern with a .667 batting average, having picked up a pair of hits in each of the Lions' three games so far. Freshman outfielder
Christian Garcia (.556) and senior third baseman
Eli Johnson (.556) contributed five hits apiece on Opening Weekend.
Starters
Jacob Burke,
Evan Keller,
Nick Ray,
Preston Faulkner and
Gaby Cruz are all hitting .500 for the Lions. Burke leads the team in extra-base hits (4), home runs (1), RBIs (8) and stolen bases (5).
Freshman right-hander
Will Kinzeler (0-0, 0.00) is slated to get the start on the mound for the Lions in the series opener, opposing sophomore righty Chase Silseth (1-0, 0.00) for Arizona. Junior left-hander
Trey Shaffer (1-0, 0.00) takes the ball for Southeastern Friday against freshman righty Chandler Murphy (0-0, 3.00).
Right-hander
Will Warren (1-0, 0.00), also a junior, heads to the bump Saturday for the Lions opposite junior southpaw Garrett Irvin (0-0, 0.00). Southeastern sophomore righty
Grant Upton (1-0, 0.00) gets the starting nod Sunday in the series finale, opposing Wildcat freshman right-hander TJ Nichols (1-0, 3.60).
Ryan Holgate is Arizona's leading hitter, pacing the squad in batting average (.429), home runs (1) and RBIs (7). He is also tied for the team lead in runs scored (4), doubles (1), walks (5) and stolen bases (1). Jacob Berry (.333) and Mac Bingham (.313) are the other Wildcats hitting over .300 after the season's opening weekend.
The Wildcats split a four-game series with Ball State on Opening Weekend, shutting out the Cardinals, 3-0, in the opener before dropping the next two by scores of 8-7 (11 innings) and 5-2. Arizona rebounded with an 11-5 win Monday on getaway day.
While Southeastern has never faced the Wildcats on the diamond, the Lions did participate in the 1992 NCAA Regional hosted by Arizona at their former facility – Sancet Stadium. Kirk Bullinger shut out Hawaii, 8-0, in Southeastern's Regional opener before the Lions dropped back-to-back games to eventual national champion Pepperdine and once again to Hawaii.
Arizona's current facility was constructed in 1937. The former Spring Training facility of both the Cleveland Indians and the Colorado Rockies, Hi Corbett Field served that purpose during filming for Major League, the 1989 movie starring Charlie Sheen, Wesley Snipes, Dennis Haysbert, Rene Russo and Bob Uecker as the imitable Harry Doyle.
