Â
HAMMOND, La. – Following Monday's last second victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, the Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball team looks to keep the momentum Wednesday night when they host McNeese at 7 p.m. in the University Center.
Â
The Lions (7-13, 5-6 Southland) enter Wednesday's game a half game out of fifth place in the conference standings behind the University of Incarnate Word (8-9, 5-5 Southland). With a victory over McNeese, the Lions will clinch a spot in the 2021 Southland Conference Tournament which begins Wednesday, Mar. 10 at the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas.
Â
SLU has four games remaining which includes three road games against Northwestern State, Central Arkansas and New Orleans and Wednesday's game with McNeese. As of Tuesday, no make up date has been announced for the Lions' home game with Abilene Christian that was postponed last week.
Â
Southeastern takes on McNeese for the second time this year as SLU edged the Cowboys, 92-88, back on Jan. 20 in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
Â
The 92 points is a season-high for the Lions as they shot 32-for-59 (54 percent) for the game, including 11-for-26 from the three-point line. Southeastern had five score in double figures led by Junior
Gus Okafor with 26 points while senior
Keon Clergeot had 22. SLU also had a season-high 17 assists and a season-low 10 turnovers in the win over the Cowboys.
Â
The Cowboys (8-11, 2-8) are led by Mississippi State transfer Keyshawn Feazell (6-9, 235). The senior is averaging 13.8 points and 10.5 rebounds per game, including seven double-doubles this year. Senior guards Dru Kuxhausen, a preseason first team All-Southland selection, and A.J. Lawson are both averaging just over 12 points per game for McNeese.
Â
While the Cowboys lead the all-time series 66-49, the Lions have won seven of the last 10 over their in-state rivals. McNeese is just 3-12 in their last 15 games in Hammond but 3-3 in their last six, including a 77-61 victory over SLU at the University Center on Jan. 22, 2020.
