HAMMOND, La. – After helping Southeastern Louisiana to a pair of victories, Southeastern Louisiana sophomore guard
Hailey Giaratano was named the Southland Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week presented by Hercules Tires, the league office announced on Monday.
Giaratano, who hails from Ponchatoula, Louisiana, is the first Lady Lion to earn Southland Conference Player of the Week honors since KaeLynn Boyd claimed the award on Dec. 28, 2015.
Giaratano averaged 19.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game in SLU's two victories to close out its six-game home stand, leading the Lady Lions in scoring in both wins.
She scored a career-high 22 points in Saturday's 82-63 victory over Nicholls that ended a streak of six straight losses to the Colonels. Wednesday's 68-67 victory over Sam Houston was highlighted by the returning
Caitlyn Williams' buzzer beater, but it was Giaratano who led Southeastern with 14 points and a game-high five assists to help SLU to its first season series sweep of the Bearkats since 2003-04.
"Individual awards come from team success, so our entire team shares in this honor," Southeastern head coach
Ayla Guzzardo said. "Hailey's been putting in the work and has shown the ability to score from multiple spots on the court. She wants the ball in her hands, because she knows she's put in the necessary preparation to be successful. We're extremely proud of Hailey."
Giaratano heads into the final three weeks of the regular season ranked among the Southland Conference leaders in scoring (11.5 ppg, 15th), three-point field goal percentage (42.6, 2
nd) and three-point field goals per game (1.5, 8
th).
