SLU Hosts Nicholls to Close Home Stand

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana women's basketball team will close out its six-game home stand on Saturday, hosting Nicholls for a 5 p.m. league contest in the University Center.
 
The game between the Lady Lions (6-6, 5-4 Southland) and the visiting Colonels (7-10, 6-4 Southland) will be televised on ESPN+ and can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9), online at www.LionSports.net/listenlive and via the TuneIn Radio and Lions Game Day Experience apps.
 
Caitlyn Williams is Saturday's Spotlight Player of the Game. The first 150 fans will receive a trading card featuring the Brusly, Louisiana native courtesy of PRIDE.
 
Making her 2020-21 season debut, Williams buried a shot at the buzzer to give Southeastern Louisiana a thrilling 68-67 victory over Sam Houston on Wednesday.
 
In Wednesday's win, Hailey Giaratano led Southeastern with 14 points and five assists, while Morgan Carrier added 13 points in her eighth consecutive double-digit scoring performance. Natalie Kelly and Chrissy Brown narrowly missed double-doubles, scoring nine points each to go with 12 and 10 rebounds, respectively.
 
Carrier leads the team and ranks sixth in the Southland Conference with 14.0 points per game. Giaratano (10.7 ppg, 17th) and Cierria Cunningham (9.7 ppg, 24th) join Carrier on the league leaderboard. Breonca Ducksworth (3.3 apg, 5th) and Cunningham (2.7 apg, 11th) are among the conference leaders in assists.
 
Carrier leads the Southland with a 45.5 three-point field goal percentage, as she (2.5, 3rd), Giaratano (1.4, 8th) and Daija Harvey (1.3, 12th) are all among the league's best in three-point field goals per game. With 120 career three-point field goals, Carrier is sixth in school history.
 
SLU enters Saturday's contest with a minus-2.8 rebounding margin. Kelly (6.9 rpg) and Brown (5.8 rpg) are the most productive players on the boards.
 
Opponents are averaging 66.6 points and 18.0 turnovers per game versus the Lady Lions. Ducksworth is 12th in the Southland with a team-high 1.9 steals per outing.
 
Nicholls snapped a two-game losing streak with a 79-77 overtime win over Lamar on Wednesday. Chelsea Cain led the way for the Colonels with 27 points and 10 rebounds.
 
Cain leads the Colonels with 16.5 points and 8.2 rebounds, ranking second and third, respectively, in the conference rankings. Chyna Allen joins Cain in double figures with 10.3 points per outing.
 
Southeastern is 58-28 versus Nicholls, though the Colonels have won the last six meetings. In the two teams' first meeting of 2020-21 back on Jan. 9, Cain scored 26 points and pulled down 12 rebounds in a 76-63 Nicholls victory in Thibodaux, Louisiana. Carrier led four Lady Lions in double figures with 14 points.
