HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team will play its first home game in over a month on Wednesday, hosting nonconference foe Millsaps at 7 p.m. in the University Center.
The game between the Lions (4-9) and the visiting Majors (2-8) will be televised on ESPN+. Wednesday's contest will be the first in Hammond for SLU since a 121-79 victory over Ecclesia on Nov. 22. The game counts as an exhibition for Millsaps.
Southeastern will be looking to snap a four-game losing streak back at home. The Lions are coming off their most challenging stretch of the nonconference schedule that saw SLU suffer road losses at Louisville, Iowa State and Iowa.
In the 93-62 loss to the Hawkeyes on Dec. 21,
Joe Kasperzyk led SLU with 14 points and five assists.
Gus Okafor and
Jalyn Hinton chipped in with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Averaging 75.5 points per game this season, SLU features a trio of players carrying double-digit scoring averages. Okafor paces the squad with 12.8 points per game, followed by Hinton (11.5 ppg) and
Keon Clergeot (11.4 ppg). Clergeot also doubles as the team's top playmaker with 3.4 assists per contest, while Hinton (7.4 rpg) and Okafor (5.4 rpg) are the team's top rebounders.
Opponents are averaging 75.8 points and 16.2 turnovers per contest versus Southeastern. Hinton's 23 blocked shots leads the Southland Conference, while Kasperzyk's team-high 23 steals are good for seventh in the league rankings.
Millsaps carries a four-game skid into Wednesday's contest. The Majors have losses to Centenary (twice), Colorado College and Sul Ross State during their streak.
Cameron Williams leads Millsaps with 15.2 points and 9.7 rebounds per contest. Brock Brown leads the team with 14 assists. Defensively, Aaron Ursin (12 blocks) and Doug Watson (12 steals) are the leaders for the Majors.
Wednesday will be the 15
th meeting between Southeastern and Millsaps with the Lions having won the previous 14 matchups. The teams last met in the 2016-17 opener with Southeastern pulling away for an 85-39 win over the visitors.
Following Wednesday's game, Southeastern will head to Katy, Texas to compete in the Southland Tip-Off Event on Jan. 6-8 at the Merrell Center. The Lions will open the men's tournament with an 11 a.m. contest versus HBU next Thursday. All of the games in Katy will be televised on ESPN+.
