Lady Lions and League-Leading McNeese Finish in 1-1 Tie

Freshman Scores First Career Goal

HAMMOND, La. – Maycie Massingill scored her first career goal as the Southeastern Louisiana University women's soccer team tied McNeese, 1-1, in their first home game in 42 days Friday night at the Strawberry Stadium.

The Lady Lions (5-5-2, 3-2-2 Southland) struck first in the 28th minute when Massingill, a freshman, took the lead from fellow freshman Shamoy Campbell on a beautiful touch hitting Massingill in stride from 12 yards out. Massingill did the rest punching it into the back left corner of the net as the Lady Lions took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

McNeese (8-3-2, 5-1-1 Southland) tied it in the second half as Rachel Young scored her fourth goal of the season from the far left side in the 54th minute. The two teams battled for the remainder of regulation but the in-state rivals needed overtime.

After a relatively uneventful first overtime, the Lady Lions were on the attack nearly winning the match on two separate occasions. Campbell's shot from 20 yards out got past McNeese keeper Jackie Kelly and hit the cross bar in the 103rd minute.

In the match's final minute, senior Megan Gordon took a corner kick from Claire Huston and headed a shot on goal that was snared by Kelly with 48 seconds left.

"It was a good effort and a game of two halves," said SLU head coach Chris McBride. "I thought we were really good in the first half and McNeese was really good in the second half. I thought we had the better chances in overtime but it was a good competitive game. I wish we had gotten the win but credit McNeese, they came in and competed very well the entire match."

Next up, Southeastern will take on Northwestern State (5-4-3, 5-1-1 Southland) Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. in Strawberry Stadium.

The match will be streamed via ESPN+ with links to video and live stats available at the Southeastern soccer schedule page located at LionSports.Net.
