Coaches during the decade include Ronnie Shelley (1980-81), Dell Hughes (1982), former letterwinner Danny Dufreche (1983-84) and John Stephenson (1985-90). 

Shelley guided the Lions through the transition from a Division II Independent to the NCAA Division I level.

Stephenson, a former Major Leaguer, led the program into the Gulf Star Conference and to its first winning seasons at the Division I level. 

Players were placed on the ballot based on postseason awards, single-season and career records earned, and overall career achievements. The team was selected by a voting base consisting of former Southeastern baseball letterwinners, coaches and administrators.

All former Southeastern baseball lettermen are eligible to cast a ballot for each of the seven squads making up the All-Decade Teams. Ballots will be conducted by email. An executive committee consisting of current and former coaches, players and SIDs will oversee the creation of the final team structure.

Lettermen interested in participating are asked to contact Associate Sports Information Director Damon Sunde (damon.sunde@southeastern.edu) to be added to the voting panel.

David McCartney – Starting Pitcher

Two-year letterwinner … member of the first Division I team in program history … led the team once each in ERA, wins and strikeouts … one of 21 pitchers in program history to win at least nine games in a single season … at the time, his nine wins in 1980 were tied for the second-highest in program history … his seven complete games in 1981 and six in 1980 both rank in the program’s Top 25 for a single season … finished his career ranked eight in complete games (13), ninth in walks issued (97) and 17th in innings pitched (160.2) … currently ranks 10th in complete games, 21st in walks issued () and 49th in innings pitched.

Andy Welter – Starting Pitcher

Two-year letterwinner … led team in ERA, wins, innings pitched and strikeouts both seasons … Gulf Star All-Conference selection in 1985 … one of 21 pitchers in program history to win at least nine games in a single season … his eight complete games in 1985 are tied for third-most in a single season … finished his career ranked ninth in complete games (12), 11th in wins (15) and 17th in innings pitched (156.0) … currently ranked 11th in complete games, 25th in wins and 53rd in innings pitched.

Errol Decker – Relief Pitcher

Two-year letterwinner … member of the first Division I team in program history … lowest career ERA (3.99) of any pitcher in the transition era … led the staff in saves (3) in 1980 … completed five of his nine career starts … finished his career as the program’s all-time saves leader (3) … currently ranks 28th in career saves.

Damon Iannelli – Relief Pitcher

Three-year letterwinner … led the staff in saves (5) in 1988, setting what was at the time the program single-season record … his 25 appearances that season were then the third-most in a single season, two shy of tying the record … currently ranks 15th in single-season appearances and 17th in single-season saves … finished his career as the program’s all-time saves leader (6) and ranked 13th in career appearances (43) … currently ranks 18th in career saves and 56th in career appearances … serves as the Assistant Scouting Director for the Colorado Rockies.

Scott Kupper – Relief Pitcher

Three-year letterwinner … saw limited playing time as a catcher and infielder in addition to his duties on the mound … led staff in both wins (7) and saves (4) during debut season, starting five of his 23 appearances and completing one … consistent reliever progressively turned in better overall numbers each season … finished career as the program’s all-time saves leader (8) and ranked 5th in appearances (51), 11th in strikeouts (127), 18th in ERA (3.25) and 23rd in innings pitched (149.1) … currently ranks 10th in career saves, 34th in appearances, 37th in both ERA and strikeouts, and 55th in innings pitched.

Sterling Housley – Second Baseman

Two-year letterwinner … consistent hitter, producing identical .303 batting average during both seasons … finished career ranked 21st in batting average (.303) … currently ranks 56th in batting average … drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays (AL) in the 12th round of the 1985 MLB Draft … played two seasons in the Blue Jays organization, reaching as high as the Single-A level.

Shane McCrory – Shortstop 

Three-year letterwinner … set then program single-season record for RBIs (45) in 1984 while also leading the team in batting average (.324), runs scored (36), hits (56) and home runs (10) that season … walked (39) more times than he struck out (31) during his career … finished career ranked 12th in home runs (15) … currently ranks 42nd in home runs.

Rod Morris – Outfielder 

Two-year letterwinner … earned Gulf Star All-Conference honors in 1987 after setting then program record for stolen bases (30) in a season … led the team in runs scored both seasons … also produced a team-high 59 hits in debut season … four triples in 1987 tied for the second-most in a single season at that time …walked (66) more times than he struck out (43) in his career … finished career third in stolen bases (49), fourth in runs scored (100), fifth in doubles (23) and 19th in home runs … currently ninth in stolen bases, 31st in runs scored, 47th in home runs and 48th in doubles … drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 25th round of the 1988 MLB Draft … played six seasons in the Rangers organization, reaching as high as the Triple-A level.

Dale Sisemore – Outfielder 

Two-year letterwinner … member of the first Division I team in program history … set then single-season records with 40 runs scored, 67 hits and 28 stolen bases in 1981 … his 62 games played in 1981 ranks as the fifth-highest total in program history … walked (31) more times in his career than he struck out (12) … finished career ranked third in stolen bases (37), fourth in batting average (.338) and 13th in on-base percentage (.412) … currently ranks 15th in batting average, 19th in stolen bases and 34th in on-base percentage.

Scott Hebert – Designated Hitter 

Four-year letterwinner … versatile player saw significant time on the mound, in the outfield and as the designated hitter … finished his career tied with Melvin Meyers as the all-time leaders in strikeouts (135) as a hitter … also ranked third in games played as a hitter (171), doubles (26) and RBIs (102), fourth in home runs (26), fifth in at-bats (480), eighth in hits (134), 14th in slugging percentage (.504), 16th in runs scored (80) … currently ranked eighth in both home runs and strikeouts as a hitter, 22nd in both games played as a hitter and RBIs, 30th in slugging percentage, 32nd in at-bats, 37th in doubles, 46th in hits and 56th in runs scored … primarily a reliever on the mound, he completed three of his 14 career starts.

Melvin Meyers – Utility 

Four-year letterwinner … holds the program record for career stolen bases (71) … led team in batting average (.331) and stolen bases (28) in 1987, and runs scored (45) in 1988 … tied then program record with 28 stolen bases in 1987 … also established then program single-season record with 27 fielding errors that season … four triples in 1988 tied for the second-most in a single season at that time … finished career tied with Darren Raspino as the program’s career leader in walks (110) … also ranked first in games played (199), at-bats (589), runs scored (131), hits (165), strikeouts (135) and fielding errors (57), fourth in doubles (24),  sixth in triples (6) and eighth in home runs (20) … currently ranks second in walks, fifth in errors, eighth in strikeouts, 10th in games played, 12th in triples, 13th in runs scored, 17th in at-bats, 19th in hits, 21st in home runs and 42nd in doubles.

Vic Biazis – Extra Infielder

Two-year letterwinner … member of the first Division I team in program history … led team in base hits (45) during his debut season and would have set the program single-season record with 65 had it not been for teammate Dale Sisemore besting him by a pair … his 64 games played in 1981 are the third-most in a single season … one of the toughest batters to strike out in program history, fanning just 10 times in 363 career at bats … struck out just three times in 209 at-bats in 1981 – an average of one strikeout every 69.7 at-bats and a figure that has only been achieved nationally by one player at the Division I level over the past 25 seasons … walked (17) more than he struck out (10) in his career.

Kevin Morgan – Extra Infielder

Three-year letterwinner … produced incredibly strong debut season hitting .345 with 15 extra-base hits, including two homers, scored 48 runs and swiped nine bags … twice led the team in runs scored … set the program’s single-season record after being caught attempting to steal 12 times … finished career third in at-bats (521), runs scored (116) and base hits (147), and seventh in stolen bases (37) … currently ranks 10th in program history with 348 fielding assists, 19th in stolen bases, 18th in runs scored, 27th in at-bats and 29th in hits … drafted twice, first by the St. Louis Cardinals (NL) in the 36th round of the 1990 MLB Draft and then later by the Detroit Tigers (AL) in the 30th round of the 1991 MLB Draft … played seven seasons of professional baseball in both the Tigers and New York Mets organizations, reaching the Major League level in 1997 with the Mets … one of nine players in program history to reach the majors … later served in various capacities in the Mets’ front office, including as their Director of Minor League Operations and most recently as their Minor League Field Coordinator through the 2019 season. 

Darren Raspino – Extra Outfielder

Four-year letterwinner … consistent everyday player with a strong eye at the plate, with nearly twice as many walks as strikeouts … finished his playing career with a .404 on-base percentage … nearly set the single-season record for walks in 1984, finishing two shy with 39 … wrapped up his career as the program’s all-time leader in games played (162), at-bats (491) and walks (110), while ranking second in both runs scored (102) and stolen bases (44), and fourth in hits (133) … currently ranks second in career walks, 10th in stolen bases, 28th in both games played and runs scored, 31st in at-bats and 48th in hits.
