Lions Take on Nicholls Saturday in Search of First Conference Win

THIBODAUX, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball team travels to face in-state rival Nicholls Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m. in Stopher Gymnasium as the Lions continue Southland Conference play.
 
The Lions (2-8, 0-1 Southland) are looking to bounce back from Wednesday's 70-52 loss to Sam Houston at home. SLU fell behind, 35-13, in the first half but rallied to cut the deficit to 63-51 in the second half before SHSU pulled away for the win. Southeastern was led by Keon Clergeot with 16 points while sophomore Nick Caldwell added 13 points and 12 rebounds for his first career double-double.
 
SLU is led by Clergeot as the senior leads the team in scoring averaging 12.8 points per game. The Winter Haven, Florida native is also third in the Southland in free throws made with 42.
 
Southeastern continues to lead the Southland in offensive rebounding averaging 13.5 second chance opportunities per game. The Lions grabbed 14 in Wednesday's loss to Sam Houston leading to 13 second chance points.
 
The Colonels (3-5, 1-1 Southland) defeated Lamar, 76-69, Wednesday night at home overcoming a 10-point second half deficit. Nicholls was led by Najee Garvin with 19 points and eight rebounds as the Colonels outscored Lamar, 47-36, in the second half.
 
Ty Gordon, a redshirt junior, leads the Colonels in scoring averaging 13.8 points per game. Kevin Johnson, a preseason second team All-Southland guard, is fifth in the conference in assists (3.6 apg).
 
Saturday is the 106th all-time meeting between Southeastern and Nicholls with the Lions holding a 57-48 lead. However, the Colonels have won the last three, including an 81-71 win at Stopher Gymnasium Feb. 15, 2020.
 
The Lions and Colonels will meet again Saturday, Feb. 13 at the University Center in Hammond, Louisiana.
