HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball begins their longest home stand of the season Saturday when they host Northwestern State at 4 p.m. in the University Center on ESPN+.
The Lions (4-10, 2-3 Southland) will start the home stand on a high note following Wednesday's 92-88 victory at McNeese (6-8, 0-5 Southland).
The 92 points was a season high for SLU as they had five players score in double figures led by junior
Gus Okafor. The Baltimore, Maryland native netted a career-high 26 points and added six rebounds to push the Lions to the win.
Senior
Keon Clergeot, who scored 22 points in the win over McNeese, leads the Lions in scoring averaging 15.1 points per game. The Winter Haven, Florida native is netting 20 points per game in Southland action, third in the conference. The UMass transfer has also made 81 of his 107 free throw attempts this season which leads the Southland.
Nick Caldwell, a sophomore, has come on strong for the Lions in conference play. The Geismar, Louisiana product is averaging 9.8 points and 6.0 rebounds per game in league play, including in his first career double-double against Sam Houston (13 points, 12 rebounds.)
The Demons (2-14, 1-4 Southland) are coming off a loss at Stephen F. Austin Wednesday night, 86-74. Despite the four conference losses, Northwestern State has been competitive in Southland action. The Demons defeated McNeese on the road, lost in overtime to Houston Baptist on the road and trailed Nicholls by one, 65-64, with 3:55 to go before falling 76-66.
The Demons, like the Lions, have played much of their schedule on the road playing 11 games away from home, including two against the nation's top ranked team, Gonzaga.
While the Demons hold the decisive lead in the all-time series, 85-55, the Lions have won the last six over Northwestern State. SLU defeated the Demons in overtime last year in Natchitoches, Louisiana, 84-81, then edged the Demons at the University Center, 95-92, scoring a season-high in points.
Northwestern State is led by Trenton Massner in scoring (11.9 ppg). The junior guard also leads the Demons in steals (22) and free throws made (41).
