HAMMOND, La. – Houston Baptist University hit 11 three-pointers tying a season high as they edged the Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball team, 79-76, Wednesday night at the University Center.
Â
Despite the loss, the Lions (6-16, 3-9 Southland) had four player score in double figures led by
Brandon Gonzalez who scored a career-high 19 points. The junior from Punta Gorda, Florida made four three-pointers and grabbed eight rebounds. Sophomore
Ty Brewer added 15 points and nine rebounds while
Von Julien had 13 points and six assists. Junior
Pape Diop chipped in with 12 points and eight rebounds.
Â
The Huskies (3-17, 3-8 Southland) picked up their first road win of the season (1-11) as they were led by Jalon Gates with 19 points including six three-pointers. Benjamin Uloko added 16 points while Jackson Stent had 11.
Â
HBU's junior guard Ian Dubose, the Southland Conference's leading scorer (19.8 ppg), was the x-factor. Despite scoring just 10 points, the Durham, North Carolina native added 14 rebounds and seven assists.
Â
In the first half, the Huskies came out on fire as they hit nine three-pointers. The Lions hung tough despite the torrid shooting pace by HBU and trailed just 41-36 at halftime.
Â
The two teams went back and forth early in the second half as the game seesawed back and forth. SLU appeared to have control of the game leading, 71-65, with 4:35 to go following a three-pointer by Gonzalez. However, the Huskies went on a 12-1 run capped off by five straight points by Dubose to break a 72-72 tie.
Â
The Lions trailed 79-74 with five seconds left when Diop hit two free throws to make it a one possession game. After Brewer stole the inbounds pass, SLU had a chance to tie the game but freshman
Byron Smith's game-tying three point attempt hit the back iron as time expired.
Â
HBU finished the game 27-for-55 (51 percent) from the field including 11-for-24 from the three-point line helping overcome 23 turnovers. The Lions shot 29-for-78 (39 percent) but scored 36 points off turnovers and had 23 fast break points. The 78 shot attempts was the most by the Lions since before the 2008-09 season.
Â
Next up, the Lions will take on the University of Incarnate Word (6-16, 3-8 Southland) Saturday afternoon in San Antonio, Texas at 4:15 p.m. UIW defeated Sam Houston State Wednesday night at home, 72-71, in overtime.
