Southeastern Earns Third Straight Victory With 7-0 Shutout of Alcorn State

Lions (3-1) close perfect home stand

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana women's tennis team concluded its three-match home stand with its third straight victory on Tuesday, defeating Alcorn State, 7-0, at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.

Playing its third match in four days, SLU (3-1) picked up five straight-set singles wins and swept through doubles play on the way to the shutout win. Alcorn State, which was playing with just five players, fell to 0-6 overall this spring.

"We were pleased to get this match in before the rain," Southeastern head coach Jason Hayes said. "Alcorn State was playing short-handed, but made us fight at the top of the singles lineup. We're doing some positive things, but we still have a lot to work on before we're ready for Southland Conference play."

In their spring debut as a team, Katya Cornejo and Teodora Mitrovic (1-0) earned a 6-0 win over the Alcorn tandem of Sofia Ievleva and Olecia James on the No. 2 court. On No. 1, Putri Insani and Ximena Yanez handled Stefany Grlj and Alessandra Maganuco, 6-3 to complete the sweep.

After the visitors defaulted on No. 6, Mitrovic (2-0) extended the lead to 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Ieveleva on court 4. Cornejo (2-0) clinched the win for Southeastern on No. 5 with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph of her own over James.

Flory Bierma (2-1) was the next Lion to secure a win, as she handed Grlj a 6-2, 6-1 loss on No. 2. On No. 3, SLU's Polina Sleptsova (2-1) was too much for Tangia Riley-Codrington, taking a 6-0, 6-4 decision.

The contest's most competitive singles match came on the top singles court. Insani (3-0) remained unbeaten this spring and secured the shutout by outlasting Maganuco, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).
