Southeastern Earns 6-1 Win Over LSUA

Lions (2-1) claim second straight home victory

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana women's tennis team remained unbeaten at home this spring with a 6-1 victory over LSU Alexandria in nonconference action Sunday afternoon at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.

The Lions (2-1) earned their second victory in as many days, winning a pair of doubles matches and five singles outings. The visitors fell to 0-4 overall.

"This was a good win for us today," Southeastern Louisiana head coach Jason Hayes said. "We had some tough battles on several courts where we had to fight back after being down and I was pleased with how we responded. Playing back-to-back matches is a physical and mental challenge and I was proud of the focus we showed today."

Southeastern opened the match by taking the doubles point. On court 3, Flory Bierma and Kim Bohlen improved to 3-0 this spring with a 6-1 victory over the Lady General pair of Milijana Milojevic and Katheryne Campos. Shortly thereafter, Putri Insani and Ximena Yanez (2-1) gave SLU a 1-0 lead with a 6-0 win over Darija Mladenovic and Marie Cool on the top court.

A pair of freshmen put Southeastern on the verge of clinching the victory. On No. 5, Bohlen (2-0) made short work of Cool in a 6-0, 6-1 triumph. Teodora Mitrovic (1-0) earned her first collegiate dual match singles win with a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Patricia Martinez on No. 4. The two straight-set wins gave the Lions a 3-1 advantage after Kyra Akinnibi retired on court 3.

Early returns indicate the Southeastern freshman trio of Bohlen, Mitrovic and Polina Slepstova are key contributors for the program's future.

"We're so excited about what our freshmen bring to our program," Hayes commented. "They all play with a great attitude and a desire to compete. Our recruiting class has fit in well with our returners to create a positive environment."

Southeastern clinched the win on No. 6, as Katya Cornejo (1-0) won her spring singles debut, 6-3, 6-3 over Campos. Insani (2-0) outlasted Mladenovic on the No. 1 court for a 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 win. Bierma (1-1) closed out the win with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 victory over Milojevic.
