HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana softball team suffered its first loss of the season on Wednesday, dropping a 9-2 decision to UAB in nonconference action at North Oak Park.
Southeastern fell to 5-1 overall with the loss. The visiting Blazers (5-1) collected 16 hits on the way to the victory.
Ali McCoy led SLU with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate.
Aeriyl Mass and
Lindsey Rizzo each scored a run, while
Ella Manzer recorded an RBI.
UAB jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning against SLU starter
Heather Zumo (1-1). The Blazers loaded the bases with two outs then Zumo hit Jenna Olszewski to force in a run.
SLU answered in the bottom of the first. Rizzo drew a one-out walk, then scored one out later after Manzer deposited a double into the right centerfield gap. Manzer's RBI knotted the score at 1-1.
An RBI single by Faith Hegh put the Blazers back on top in the top of the second inning. Southeastern threated in the bottom of the third inning, as a single by Mass, followed by walks issued to
Madisen Blackford and Manzer, loaded the bases with one out. However, UAB pitcher Sarah Cespedes struck out
Briahna Bennett and
Karlee Kraft to keep the Blazer lead to 2-1.
UAB extended its lead in the fourth inning. RBI's by Dylinn Stancil, Analyse Petree and Natalie Erwin gave the Blazers a 5-1 cushion.
A pair of UAB errors allowed SLU to cut the lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning. However, the Blazers added three runs in the sixth and a run in the seventh to end any comeback hopes for Southeastern.

The Lady Lions head to Gainesville, Florida to compete in the Bubly Invitational hosted by Florida. On Friday, Southeastern faces North Dakota State at 8 a.m. and Florida A&M at 10:30 a.m. SLU takes on Longwood at 3:30 p.m. and FAMU at 6 p.m. on Saturday. On Sunday, the Lady Lions match up with the host Gators at 10:30 a.m.
