BEAUMONT, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball team wraps up the non-conference schedule Tuesday night when they face Lamar on the road at 7 p.m. in the Montagne Center.
Â
The Lions (2-6) look to build momentum following a 77-70 win Wednesday at Grambling. SLU was led by senior
Keon Clergeot who tied a career-high scoring 25 points while juniors
Gus Okafor and
Joe Kasperzyk both had 16 points. Okafor, out of Baltimore, Maryland, snatched 10 rebounds to notch a double-double.
Â
Clergeot, a Winter Haven, Florida native, leads the Lions in scoring, averaging 12.4 points per game. The UMass transfer also leads the team in three-pointers made and free throws made and is second in assists and steals.
Â
Another positive for SLU entering Tuesday's game is the Lions' three-point shooting. Â Southeastern shot 14 percent (10-for-68) from the beyond the arc in the first three games of the season. However, the Lions have improved shooting 36 percent (40-for-110) from long range over the last five games, including 10-for-23 in the win over Grambling.
Â
The Cardinals (1-7) come into Tuesday's contest with the Lions looking to snap a three-game losing streak. Lamar fell at home to Southern Miss and dropped a pair of road games to Louisiana Tech and UT-San Antonio.
Â
Lamar is led by preseason second team All-Southland selection Davion Buster. The junior missed the first four games of the season but since his return the Austin, Texas native is averaging 16.3 points per game.
Â
The Lions and Cardinals have split the last eight games with Lamar winning last year, 79-73, in overtime at the Montagne Center. SLU is 9-16 all time on the road against LU.
Â
While the grueling, nine-game road trip will conclude Tuesday for SLU, the Lions will have to wait eight days until their much-anticipated home opener. Southeastern will host Sam Houston State (5-5) Wednesday, Jan. 6 at 7 p.m. in their Southland Conference opener.
Â
Southeastern was scheduled to host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (3-6) Saturday afternoon in Hammond. Due to COVID-19 protocols, A&M-Corpus Christi was forced to shut down for two weeks postponing the game with the Lions.
