Â
GRAMBLING, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball team returns to the court after eight days off Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. when they face Grambling State University on the road in the Frederick C. Hobdy Center.
Â
Including Wednesday's contest, the Lions (1-6) have just two games remaining in their season opening nine-game road trip before beginning league play. Southeastern will also face Lamar (non-conference game) on the road Tuesday, Dec. 29 at 7 p.m. in Beaumont, Texas to wrap up their non-conference slate.
Â
SLU was originally scheduled to play an 11-game road trip. However, the Lions had games at Missouri State and Stephen F. Austin canceled due to COVID-19 protocols within the SFA and Missouri State programs.
Â
The Lions are coming off a hard-fought loss to Texas A&M last Tuesday, 69-52. Southeastern got 14 points from senior
Keon Clergeot while sophomore
Nick Caldwell added 11. SLU held the Aggies to 4-for-15 shooting from the three-point line and forced the SEC powerhouse into 17 turnovers. TAMU outscored Southeastern, 40-14, in the paint to hold off the gritty Lions.
Â
SLU has played seven games in five different states (Indiana, California, Louisiana, Alabama and Texas), including games against Purdue Fort Wayne, LSU, UAB, California Baptist twice, TAMU and Louisiana Tech.
Â
Entering Wednesday's game, Southeastern is led by Clergeot (10.6 ppg) and junior
Joe Kasperzyk (9.2 ppg) in scoring. Clergeot, a UMass transfer, also leads the team in steals (9) and free throws made (32).
Â
Grambling (2-4) has also had a road-heavy non-conference schedule playing five of six games away from home. GSU defeated ULM on the road, while falling at Arizona, Texas Tech, Tulane and Grand Canyon. The Tigers won their only home contest of the season thus far beating East Texas Baptist University.
Â
GSU is led by guard Cameron Christon in scoring and rebounding. The redshirt junior is averaging 12.8 points per game, including a season-high 17 points in the Tigers' 78-61 win over ULM Dec. 16. Christon is also pulling down 5.5 rebounds per contest.
Â
Wednesday marks the fourth straight season SLU and GSU have faced off. The Lions lead the all-time series, 7-5, but the Tigers have won the last three following their 81-70 victory over SLU at the University Center last season.
Â
Southeastern is less than two weeks away from their Southland Conference and home opener. The Lions will host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday, Jan. 2 after the matchup with Lamar Dec. 29.
