HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana women's basketball team will close out its 2020-21 non-conference schedule with a pair of road contests versus in-state opponents.
SLU (1-1) just added a contest at Tulane (3-2) on Saturday at 5 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN+. On Monday, the Lady Lions will close out non-conference play with a 4 p.m. contest at Grambling (1-3).
The Lady Lions will be back in action for the first time since Nov. 27, as SLU has seen five games canceled due to COVID-19 protocols. Southeastern saw defending Sun Belt Conference champion Troy pull away late for an 81-69 victory over the Lady Lions in the opening game of the 33
rd Annual Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic at Southern Miss.
In the loss to the Trojans,
Cierria Cunningham led Southeastern with 18 points.
Hailey Giaratano and
Breonca Ducksworth joined Cunningham in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Cunningham is the leading scorer for a Lady Lion squad averaging 84.0 points per game. The Tuscaloosa, Alabama native enters the final non-conference contests of 2020-21 with 13.5 points per game. Giaratano (12.5 ppg),
Bryana Langford (11.5 ppg) and Ducksworth (10.5 ppg) are the other top scorers for Southeastern.
Chrissy Brown (9.5 ppg) rounds out the top five in scoring for the Lady Lions, while also pacing the squad with 6.0 rebounds per game and a 66.7 three-point field goal percentage. Cunningham leads the team with 3.5 assists per outing, while Giaratano averages a team-high 2.0 steals per contest.
Tulane has wins over Nicholls (88-43), South Alabama (77-73) and Middle Tennessee State (81-78) to its credit, while suffering narrow road defeats at Georgia Tech (55-51) and Central Florida (66-62).
The Green Wave are led by Jerkaila Jordan, who is averaging 17.8 points and 3.4 assists per game. Krystal Freeman is second on the team with 13.6 points per contest and paces TU with 9.0 rebounds per game. Arsula Clark (12.0 ppg) gives Tulane a trio of double-digit scoring averages.
Southeastern is 6-14 all-time versus Tulane. The Green Wave has won the last 10 meetings between the in-state rivals, with an 80-52 victory in the 2013-14 season the most recent.
On Monday, SLU travels to a Grambling team that will be opening its home schedule. The Lady Tigers have losses at Florida (90-47), Louisiana Tech (79-69) and UAB (70-62), as well as a victory over ULM (66-42). Alexus Holt (12.3 ppg) and Candice Parramore (10.5 ppg) are the top scorers for GSU.
Grambling and Southeastern will be meeting for the 10
th all-time with the Lady Lions holding a 5-4 record in the all-time series. The teams last met in the 2017-18 season with the Lady Tigers dropping SLU, 61-52.
