Headhunters 18, Hitmen 5

10/2/2020 4:33:00 PM

Box Score

HAMMOND, La. – An eight-run first inning and a nine-run sixth inning propelled the Headhunters to an 18-5 victory in Game 3 of the Southeastern Louisiana Softball World Series Friday afternoon at North Oak Park.

The Headhunters, coached by assistant coach Jack Byerley and player development and camp coordinator April Byerley, took a 2-1 lead over the Hitmen, coached by assistant coach Katie Godwin and senior Madison Watson, in the seven-game intrasquad series.

Aeriyl Mass led the Headhunters with five hits, while Lexi Johnson and Audrey Greely added four hits apiece to highlight an 18-hit attack. Ellie DuBois paced the team with four RBI, while Cameron Beal scored a team-high five runs. Sophie Hannabas (1-0) allowed three hits and no earned runs, striking out four in three innings of work to earn the win in the circle.

Cameron Goodman, Anna Rodenberg, Gina Escude and Kylie Chauvin led the Hitmen with two hits apiece. Escude drove in three runs, while Rodenberg scored two runs.

Rodenberg singled with two outs and scored after three passed balls to give the Hitmen a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

The Headhunters quickly took the lead versus Hitmen starter Anna Westberry (1-1). DuBois drove in four runs during the inning, while Johnson and Mass also singled home runs. The Headhunters took advantage of three Hitmen errors to take a commanding 8-1 lead.

The Headhunters padded their lead in the top of the third inning. Beal drew a leadoff walk and scored one out error on an RBI triple by Greely to extend the advantage to 9-1.

Escude drove in three runs over the next two innings to pull the Hitmen closer and cut the lead to 9-5. Any hope of a comeback was squashed by a nine-run sixth inning for the Headhunters. Beal and Greely each drove in two runs during the inning, while Johnson and Mass also drove in runs during the frame. A bases loaded error allowed three more runs to score to account for the final 18-5 margin.

The series continues with Game 4 on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 2:45 p.m. Fans can watch a free video stream using the Lions' Gameday Experience app for Android or iOS devices, the Southland Conference Digital Network app for smart TV devices (e.g. Apple TV, Amazon Fire, Android TV and Roku) or through the Southeastern Athletics website at www.LionSports.net/SSN.
