Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Lady Lions Fall to South Alabama, 3-0

Corner Kicks Costly for SLU in Loss to USA

HAMMOND, La. – Briana Morris scored two goals to lead South Alabama past the Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team, 3-0, Sunday night at Strawberry Stadium.

USA (4-1-1) outshot SLU (1-3-1) 18-6 for the match. The Lady Jags also attempted eight corner kicks which led to two goals while the Lady Lions attempted three.

Morris, a senior from Hoover, Alabama, scored in the seventh minute off a corner kick. The forward was able to record her seventh goal of the season after SLU goalkeeper Nadine Maher made a great save. But the ball deflected right to Morris who knocked into the back of the net.

The Lady Lions fell victim to the corner kick again late in the first half. USA's Olivia Wilkes played a ball right in front of the SLU net. Maher, again, was able to save the initial shot but the ball bounced to Leandra Flury who punched it in making it, 2-0.

Morris finished it off in the 88th minute when she outran the SLU defense and got free for her eighth goal of the year clinching the win for the Lady Jags.

The Lady Lions, after coming off a 1250-mile round trip to 10th-ranked Tennessee Thursday, were unable to shake off the 18 hour bus ride.

"I think the fatigue was there," said third-year SLU soccer head coach Chris McBride. "But I don't think as a coach I prepared us properly for the game and that's on me. And I'm going to make sure that the preparation next time is better because I didn't put them in the best situation for the travel and recovery for this game. And the two corner kicks were on me because I didn't prepare us right for them so I need to go back and see what I can do better. But a lot of credit to South Alabama. They played really well and my hat's off to them."

Maher finished the match with six saves to lead SLU. Hitomi Konno, Caroline Lee and Hanna Moffatt each had one shot on goal for the Lady Lions.

Up next, the Lady Lions will travel for a pair of roads matches next week at Memphis (4-1) Thursday night at 7 p.m. and Little Rock (1-4-1) Saturday at 1 p.m.
