HAMMOND, La. – Armed with over two decades of collegiate coaching experience,
Jack Byerley has joined the Southeastern Louisiana softball staff as an assistant coach, SLU head coach
Rick Fremin announced on Wednesday.
Byerley's hire is pending approval from the University of Louisiana System's Board of Supervisors. Byerley will primarily work with the Lady Lion hitters and infielders.
"We're excited to add a coach with Jack's experience to our program," Fremin said. "Coach Byerley comes to us with regional experience, which will be invaluable as our program moves forward. Adding a coach with his knowledge of the game makes us better."
Byerley spent the 2019 season as a volunteer assistant at Spring Hill College under legendary former South Alabama baseball coach Steve Kittrell. Prior to that, he spent 11 seasons as the head coach at Northwest Florida State College, where he led the Raiders to 378 wins, 10 FCSAA tournament appearances and three Panhandle Conference championships.
Prior to taking over in Niceville, he was an assistant at Auburn for three seasons and twice helped the Tigers to NCAA Regional appearances. His time at Auburn followed a two-year stint at Francis-Marion, where as head coach he led the Patriots to a 73-26 record and the school's first-ever Division II national ranking.
Byerley's first Division I experience came as an assistant at Florida from 2000-02. During his time with the Gators, UF advanced to the NCAA Regional in 2001.
Byerley came to Florida after starting the softball program at Central Alabama Community College. He posted a 205-47 record and led the team to four consecutive conference championships, twice earning Alabama Junior College Athletic Association Coach of the Year honors.
Byerley got his coaching start at Robertsdale High School in Alabama, where he led the program to a 107-9 record and back-to-back state championships in his final two seasons.
A native of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Byerley received his bachelor's degree in physical education and health from South Alabama in 1981.
