Lions pick up 10-3 win over ULM

HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana broke open a scoreless game in the fourth inning Tuesday, holding off ULM in a 10-3 nonconference win at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

Following Saturday's 19-4 triumph at Troy, the victory marks the first time this season the Lions (4-8) have won back-to-back games.

ULM (5-6) starting pitcher Cole Martin (0-2) and Lion starter Mason Knopp locked into a pitcher's duel early, cruising through three scoreless innings to begin the contest.

After Kade Granier (1-1) worked a scoreless fourth in relief, Southeastern finally broke through with a big inning.

Designated hitter Preston Faulkner, a sophomore from Denham Springs, Louisiana, led off the inning with his second hit of the game. With one out, Nathan Pilutti drew a walk and Brennan Breaud was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Nick Ray chased Martin from the game with a long single to right field, driving in both Faulkner and Pilutti.

Reliever Landon Longsworth walked Connor Manola to load the bases. Trey Harrington plated Breaud with a sacrifice fly to center field. Ray also trotted home on the play following an errant relay throw.

The Warhawks responded with a pair of runs in fifth, cutting the Southeastern lead to 4-2 halfway through the game.

In the fifth, Faulkner scored from second when ULM's middle infielders allowed a two-out pop up off the bat of Kyle Schimpf to drop untouched.

Responding with another run in the top of the sixth, the Warhawks pulled back within a pair, 5-3.

Back-to-back RBI doubles by Manola and Harrington allowed Southeastern to extend its lead back to four in the sixth. Three more runs in the seventh closed out the scoring for the Lions.

Granier, the second of four pitchers used in the game by Southeastern, earned the win. Grant Upton, a freshman from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, earned the first save of his collegiate career after tossing three scoreless frames to close out the game.

Martin suffered the loss, surrendering four runs in 3.1 innings of work.

Breaud (2-for-3), Faulkner (2-for-5) and Ray (2-for-4) all turned in multihit performances for the Lions. Cody Grosse, who was 0-for-4 at the plate Tuesday night, had his 11-game hitting streak snapped.

The series concludes Wednesday at 4 p.m. In the finale, the Lions will send sophomore southpaw Trey Shaffer (0-1, 10.61) to the mound opposite ULM righty Conner Deeds (0-0, 3.86).

Wednesday's game is another Cane's Challenge contest. If the Lions score five or more runs, fans can redeem their game ticket or student coupon at their local participating Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers to receive a free combo with the purchase of another of equal or greater value.
