Winning Streak Snapped as Lions Strand 11

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana's eight-game winning streak, tied for the longest active streak in the nation entering the game, came to an end Sunday as the Lions left 11 runners on base en route to dropping a 4-2 decision in the series finale at Stephen F. Austin.

With the loss to the Lumberjacks (14-15, 8-4 Southland), Southeastern (14-13, 6-3 Southland) falls 1.5 games behind conference-leader Sam Houston State.

Both teams struggled to execute early. After Brennan Breaud and Preston Faulkner knocked back-to-back singles to open the game, Kyle Schimpf popped out on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Trey Harrington followed by grounding into an inning-ending double play.

In the bottom of the first inning, SFA loaded the bases on an error and a pair of walks before Will Warren struck out Lumberjack designated hitter Sean Moore to end the inning.

Southeastern worked three walks to load the bases in the second but failed to produce a run. In the bottom half of the inning, Warren worked around a one-out single, striking out three.

Faulkner was hit by a pitch leading off the third and advanced to second on Schimpf's single to right field. Nick Ray, the reigning Southland Conference Hitter of the Week, drew a walk to load the bases. Faulkner scored on a wild pitch, but that was the only run the Lions would score off SFA starting pitcher Jacob Stobart.

The Lumberjacks took the lead in the fourth. Warren hit SFA second baseman Jake Georgiades with a one-out pitch. The eight and nine hitters, Jarrod Huber and Carson Clowers, produced back-to-back singles to load the bases. Center fielder Nick Daley followed with a single to left-center, driving in a pair.

SFA added two more runs in the sixth. Moore and Georgiades produced back-to-back singles to open up the inning. After a sacrifice bunt, Warren hit Clowers with a pitch to load the bases. Daley reached on a fielder's choice, plating one run, and right fielder Brandon Uhse drove in the Lumberjacks' final run with an infield single.

Southeastern's final run came on Schimpf's solo home run in the seventh. The blast to right-center was his fourth of the season and second in as many games.

Stobart (4-1) earned the win, allowing one run in five innings of work. Tyler Starks retired the only batter he faced to close out the game, earning his fourth save of the season.

Warren (2-3), the first of four Lion pitchers, was tagged with the loss. The right-hander allowed four runs in 5.2 innings pitched, surrendering eight hits and two walks. He struck out a career-high seven batters.

Breaud, Faulkner and Schimpf picked up a pair of hits apiece.

Southeastern wraps up its five-game road trip Tuesday with a 6:30 p.m. nonconference game at UL Lafayette. The Lions return home Wednesday, hosting the same Ragin' Cajun club at 6 p.m. at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

Before Wednesday's home game, the Southeastern Student Government Association will sponsor a student tailgate atop the parking garage attached to Strawberry Stadium. The game is also a Cane's Challenge contest. If the Lions score five or more runs, all fans in attendance can redeem their game ticket or student coupon at their local participating Raising Cane's to receive a free combo with the purchase of another of equal or greater value.
