MOBILE, Ala. – Southeastern Louisiana scored an unearned run in the sixth, holding on to shut out South Alabama in a good, old fashioned pitchers' duel, 1-0, Tuesday at Stanky Field.
The Lions (12-12) extended their winning streak to six, taking the opening game of a five-game road trip on a cool night at South Alabama (12-11).
Both starting pitchers were locked in from the beginning. Neither team had a batter reach until the bottom of the third. Southeastern's
Justin Simanek fanned the side in the first, retiring the first six batters he faced.
Jaguar right fielder Bennett Shell singled to lead off the third but was promptly erased on an unconventional double play. Michael Sandle, the next hitter for South Alabama, flew out to right field and Shell was doubled off by Lion right fielder
Nathan Pilutti.
Preston Faulkner ripped a single down the left-field line with one out in the fourth, but Southeastern stranded him at second base.
After four shutout innings, Simanek handed pitching duties over to
Bryce Tassin. The redshirt junior from Walker, Louisiana, stepped in and continued the pitching dominance.
The lone run of the game scored in the sixth.
Connor Manola was hit by a pitch for the team-leading ninth time this season, leading off the inning.
Bryce Steckler dropped down a sacrifice bunt that was misplayed by South Alabama starting pitcher Jared Proctor.
Cody Grosse followed with another sacrifice bunt, moving both runners into scoring position.
Faulkner greeted reliever Nick DeSantis with a sacrifice fly to right, plating Manola for the lead.
Tassin (2-0), who earned the win, worked three scoreless innings before yielding to
Jared Biddy in the eighth. Biddy worked around a leadoff walk in the eighth and a one-out single in the ninth to close out the game, earning his third save of the season.
The win marked the Lions first 1-0 win since the second round of the 2014 Southland Conference Tournament, defeating then No. 22-ranked Sam Houston State in Conway, Arkansas.
Southeastern continues its road trip this weekend with a three-game Southland Conference series in Nacogdoches, Texas, against Stephen F. Austin.
