BEAUMONT, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana's
Vicky Scholz and
Ceci Mercier each won in both singles and doubles play, as the Lions earned a 6-1 victory over Incarnate Word in Southland Conference women's tennis action Saturday afternoon at the Thompson Family Tennis Center on the Lamar campus.
Saturday's match was a makeup of a rainout earlier this spring. Per Southland rules, makeup matches have to be played at a neutral site, leading to Saturday's match being contested in Beaumont.
Southeastern (5-7, 2-2 Southland) evened its league record with Saturday's victory. UIW, which only dressed five players, fell to 4-9 overall and 0-5 in league action.
Southeastern head coach
Jason Hayes was pleased with how his team bounced back from last week's 6-1 loss to McNeese.
"We lost to McNeese in large partbecause we didn't show any positive emotion," Hayes commented. "We did a much better job of playing positive today and the results showed. Vicky and Ceci have been great in doubles with four straight wins and they both came up with great efforts in singles for us. This was a very positive day for our team."
SLU took a 1-0 lead in doubles play. After
Flory Bierma and
Katya Cornejo won by default on the No. 3 court, Scholz and Mercier clinched the point with a 6-1 victory over Jelena Dordan and Alejandra Tamayo on No. 2. The duo is now 4-0 this spring with all four wins coming in Southland play.
After Bierma picked up a defaut win on No. 6 in singles play, Scholz earned her first collegiate singles win on court 3. Scholz handled Sara Djurdjevic, 6-1, 6-3, to give the Lions a 3-0 lead.
Mercier (5-3, 2-2 Southland) clinched the victory on No. 4. The Montevideo, Uruguay native got past UIW's Alejandra Landaluce, 6-1, 6-3 to secure the win.
A straight-set victory on No. 2 gave UIW its only point.
Putri Insani (6-3, 3-1 Southland) added to her team-high singles victories total with a 6-2, 7-6 victory over Dordan on the feature court.
Bernadette Dornieden closed out the win on No. 5, defeating Tamayo, 7-5, 4-6, 10-4.
Southeastern and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will face off at noon on Sunday in another makeup match at the Municipal Tennis Center in Beaumont, Texas.
