Lions take advantage of freebies, claim series finale at Oklahoma State

STILLWATER, Okla. – Southeastern Louisiana took advantage of seven walks issued by Oklahoma State pitching as the Lions took the series finale with a 5-3 nonconference win Sunday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.

The bullpen duo of Kade Granier and Jared Biddy closed it out for Southeastern (7-12), corralling the Cowboy (12-6) offense over the final four innings.

For the second time in as many days, Cody Grosse provided a first-inning spark for the Lions. After leading off Saturday's game with a home run, the senior shortstop drew a walk to open Sunday's tilt. Advancing to third base following a groundout and a single, Grosse scored on Kyle Schimpf's grounder to first.

Southeastern starting pitcher Will Warren retired all three batters he faced in the first inning and the Lion offense went back to work in the second.

With one out, Trey Harrington and Connor Manola worked back-to-back walks. Oklahoma State pulled starting pitcher Mitchell Stone in favor of reliever Brett Standlee, but the right-hander walked Bryce Steckler, the first batter he faced, to load the bases.

Grosse lofted a sacrifice fly to right, allowing Harrington to score. Manola also tagged up on the play, advancing to third and setting up the next Southeastern run. With Brennan Breaud at the plate, Steckler took off for second. Drawing a throw from the catcher, Steckler stayed in a rundown long enough for Manola to score from third.

The Cowboys took advantage of some control issues in their half of the second. Warren walked back-to-back hitters to open up the inning. The right-hander from Brandon, Mississippi, struck out the next batter before allowing a single to load the bases. Christian Funk, the Oklahoma State third baseman, drove a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home a run.

Leading 3-1 in the fourth, Southeastern tacked on another run. Harrington ripped a two-out double into the right-center field gap, scoring on Manola's single to center.

Oklahoma State pulled within one in the bottom of the inning. Warren once again issued back-to-back walks, this time with two outs, before getting what he thought was a fly ball for the final out. Fighting off the sun, left fielder Preston Faulkner overran the ball, allowing Funk's fly to drop untouched for a two-run double.

The Lions answered in the fifth, extending its lead again. Steckler drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, he scored on Breaud's sacrifice fly to right-center.

Warren fanned a pair in the bottom half of the inning, working around a one-out single before handing the ball over to the bullpen in the sixth.

Granier retired the side in order in the sixth but handed Biddy a pair of inherited runners in the seventh. Biddy fanned left fielder Colin Simpson to end the threat.

The right-hander from Iowa Park, Texas, worked around errors in the eighth and ninth before getting Simpson to ground out with the potential tying runs on base to end the game.

Warren (1-2) earned the win, allowing three runs in five innings of work. He scattered four hits and four walks, striking out six. Biddy picked up his first save of the season, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings to close it out. Stone (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing three runs in 1.1 innings pitched. He surrendered one hit, walking three and striking out one.

Seven of the eight runs that scored in the game reached base via a walk.
