LAFAYETTE, La. – In a highly-competitive contest that featured four three-set singles matches, the Southeastern Louisiana women's tennis team was defeated, 4-2, by UL Lafayette Friday evening at Cajun Courts.
Southeastern (2-2) won the doubles point, but saw the hosts rally with four singles wins. UL Lafayette improved to 4-2 this spring with the comeback win.
"We played hard, but credit UL Lafayette for fighting hard and earning the victory," Southeastern head coach
Jason Hayes said. "We have a young team and the lessons we learned today will make us a better team in the long run."
The Lions jumped on top with a pair of doubles victories. On the No. 3 court, the SLU duo of
Flory Bierma and
Katya Cornejo rolled past the Ragin' Cajun team of Clara Mantaux and Marina Garcia, 6-2. After UL Lafayette evened things with a win on No. 2, Lions
Putri Insani and
Ximena Yanez gave SLU a 1-0 lead with a 7-5 win over Dana Radovanovic and Floriane Picaut on court 1.
UL Lafayette retook the lead in singles play with straight-set triumphs on the top two singles courts.
Ceci Mercier evened the match with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Clara Mantaux on No. 5.
The Ragin' Cajuns clinched the win with a pair of three-set victories. On No. 4, UL Lafayette retook the lead, as Garcia rallied past Southeastern's
Bernadette Dornieden, 5-7, 7-6 (7-1), 6-2.
The match was won on the No. 6 court. Ai Noa Fabre outlasted Bierma for a 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 win to finish out the victory.
Southeastern will continue its road swing at Jackson State on Friday, February 15 at 1 p.m. in Jackson, Mississippi.
