SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Southeastern Louisiana's
Ceci Mercier and
Flory Bierma each won the first sets on their respective singles courts, but it was not enough as the Lions fell, 4-0, to Santa Clara in non-conference women's tennis action Thursday afternoon at the Degheri Tennis Center.
Southeastern fell to 3-4 overall with Thursday's defeat. Santa Clara (2-3) clinched the match with wins on the top two doubles courts and three straight-set singles victories.
"We got off to a slow start, but we adjusted very well to the windy conditions," Southeastern head coach
Jason Hayes said. "Santa Clara is a tough team, but we pushed them on every court. We're getting better each time out and are getting closer to winning these types of matches."
The Santa Clara duo of Katya Tabachnik and Caitlyn Frankel gave the Broncos an early advantage in doubles with a 6-1 victory over Bierma and
Katya Cornejo on No. 2. On the feature court, SCU clinched the doubles point, as Maddie Pothoff and Elvena Gevargiz outlasted the Lion pair of
Putri Insani and
Ximena Yanez, 6-3.
On the No. 4 singles court, Mercier and Tabachnik were deadlocked in a 4-6, 6-2, 2-2 three-set match when the match was decided. Bierma was poised to defeated Frankel on No. 5, leading 4-6, 6-4, 5-2.
Santa Clara took a 2-0 lead when Gevargiz beat
Vicky Scholz, 6-2, 6-4, on No. 2. On No. 6, Cornejeo wasn't able to overcome Nadine Del Carmen in a 6-3, 6-2 loss. Pothoff clinched the match for SCU with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Insani on court 1.
The Lions will close out their road swing on Friday with a 3 p.m. match at Cal State-Northridge.
