SLU Closes Pre-Southland Schedule With Loss at CSUN

Lions host ACU on Friday, March 1 at 1 p.m. to open conference play

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Southeastern Louisiana closed out its 2018-19 pre-Southland Conference schedule with a 4-0 loss at Cal State-Northridge in non-conference women's tennis action Friday afternoon at the Matador Tennis Complex.

SLU (3-5) ended its six-match road swing and West Coast road trip with Friday's loss. CSUN won a pair of doubles matches and three straight-set singles matches to improve to 4-3 this spring.

"We continue to play hard, but we're making too many mistakes to be successful against a team of CSUN's caliber," Southeastern head coach Jason Hayes commented. "We're ready to get back to work when we get home and prepare for Southland Conference play."

The Matadors took an early 1-0 lead in doubles play. CSUN won on courts 2 and 3 by identical 6-1 scores.

The lead would move to 2-0 in singles play, as Ana Isabel Fraile Toboso got past SLU's Vicky Scholz, 6-3, 6-3, on the No. 2 court. On No. 5, Lion freshman Flory Bierma was overcome by Emma Roenholt, 6-4, 6-1.

The match was clinched on court 4, as Sibel Demirbaga defeated Ceci Mercier, 6-2, 7-6 (7-1). The loss was the first of the spring for the senior from Montevideo, Uruguay.

Southeastern did claim one set during singles play. On No. 1, Putri Insani bounced back to take the second set from CSUN's Joleen Coetzee, 6-2, after dropping the first set, 6-4.

The Lions will return home to open Southland Conference play on Friday, March 1, hosting Abilene Christian at 1 p.m. at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
