HAMMOND, La. – Louisiana Tech completed a series sweep of Southeastern Louisiana, picking up a 12-8 win over the Lions in nonconference action Sunday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
It marks the first time Southeastern (0-3) has been winless this far into the season since 1994.
Tech (3-0) built an early lead, scratching across three first-inning runs and adding one in the second.
Southeastern responded by generating runs, plating three in the third.
Nick Ray, a redshirt freshman from Jefferson, Louisiana, led off the inning with a single to left. He advanced to second after catcher
Connor Manola was hit by a pitch and came around to score on
Cody Grosse's RBI single through the right side.
Manola advanced to third on the Grosse's single and scored when Tech starting pitcher Logan Bailey was called for a balk. After
Brennan Breaud singled and designated hitter
Preston Faulkner was hit by a pitch, one of six batters hit by Bulldog pitching in the game, Grosse scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Kyle Schimpf.
The Lions batted around in the fourth, scoring five two-out runs for an 8-4 lead, but Tech answered immediately.
Picking up a pair in the fifth, the Bulldogs cut into the lead and then batted around in the sixth. The five-run sixth put Tech up for good, tacking on one final run in the seventh.
Bulldog reliever Quinton Logan (1-0) earned the win, working 2.1 scoreless innings. Jonathan Fincher tossed three scoreless frames to close out the game, earning a save in his collegiate debut. Southeastern reliever
Peyton Lee (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing three runs in one inning of work.
Breaud (3-for-6), Grosse (2-for-5) and
Nathan Pilutti (2-for-4) led the Lions at the plate. For the third straight game, Faulkner drove in a pair.
Southeastern travels to preseason No. 1-ranked LSU for a 6;30 p.m. contest Tuesday at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field.
