HAMMOND, La. – The reigning Southland Conference champion Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball team looks to avenge Wednesday's setback to Sam Houston State when they host Nicholls Saturday at 4 p.m. at the University Center.
Â
The Lions (8-13, 4-4 Southland) had their four-game winning streak snapped by league-leading SHSU after committing 19 turnovers in Wednesday's 62-52 loss.
Â
Freshman
Jeremiah Saunders, making his first start of his career, scored 12 points on four three-pointers against the Bearkats to lead the Lions. Senior
Moses Greenwood added nine points as he sits just three points shy of 10
th place in all-time SLU scoring history going into Saturday's matchup. The Sharon, Mississippi native has scored 1,261 points in 118 career games.
Â
The Colonels (10-11, 3-5 Southland), after starting 3-1 in the conference, have lost four in row including losses to Central Arkansas, McNeese, Lamar and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Â
SLU and Nicholls met twice last year with the Lions winning both matchups. Southeastern defeated the Colonels, 67-63, on the road and clinched the Southland Conference in the regular season finale Mar. 3, 2018 at the University Center cruising to a 69-57 win.
Â
"They're a very talented team," said fifth-year SLU head basketball coach
Jay Ladner. "In my time here, each game we've played has always been a battle and I expect nothing less Saturday. But the thing that's impressive is their size. They look like a high major team that is tough to matchup with so we will have our hands full."
Â
Nicholls is led by senior Jeremiah Jefferson in scoring (15.9 ppg). The Dallas, Texas native also leads the team in three-pointers made (64) and steals (21). Senior Gavin Pepper is second in scoring (14.2 ppg). The Washington D.C. native is shooting 95 percent from the free throw line (59-for-62).
Â
Saturday will be Youth Day in the University Center, as all fans 12 and under will receive free admission. Any fans with a valid middle school, junior high or high school ID will receive a $3 ticket.
Â
Saturday's game will be broadcast on ESPN3 and can be heard live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9), online at
www.LionSports.net/listenlive and via the Lions Game Day Experience, Radio FX and TuneIn Radio apps.
Â
After Saturday's matchup with Nicholls, the Lions will hit the road for two games next week. SLU will face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (9-11, 4-3 Southland) Wednesday night at 7 p.m. and Central Arkansas (10-12, 5-4 Southland) Saturday, Feb. 9 at 4 p.m. in Conway, Arkansas.
