Houston Drops SLU, 78-65, in Season Opener

Lady Lions back in action on Wednesday at USM

HOUSTON, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana women's basketball team could not overcome 30 turnovers in a 78-65 loss to Houston in its 2019-20 opener Saturday afternoon in the Fertitta Center.

Southeastern (0-1), playing without returning starters Caitlyn Williams and Tyler Morrison, fell behind by double digits in the first period and could never recover. The host Cougars (1-1) could never break the game open, but the turnovers were the difference.

Returning All-Southland Conference guard Celica Sterling led SLU with 17 points, while Charliee Dugas added 11 points off the bench for the Lady Lions. In their respective official Lady Lion debuts, Alexius Horne and Breonca Ducksworth each dished out three assists for Southeastern.

Aminat Jubril led Southeastern with 12 rebounds, though Houston finished with a 44-37 advantage on the boards. Dugas led SLU with three steals and the balanced Lady Lion attack saw 10 different players score.

Jasmyne Harris led four Cougars in double figures with 20 points and also paced UH with six steals. Tatyana Hill (13 points), Julie Blackshell-Fair (13 points) and Dymond Gladney (10 points) each finished in double figures for Houston.

Hill notched a double-double for the Cougars with 13 points and 12 boards. Harris, Gladney and Bria Patterson each finished with two steals for Houston.

Houston led 22-10 at the end of the first quarter and Southeastern could get no closer than nine the rest of the way, as UH grew the lead to as many as 20 in the third quarter.
