HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana clinched a spot in the 2019 Southland Conference Volleyball Tournament with a four-set win over rival Nicholls, 25-27, 25-23, 26-24, 25-14, Tuesday at the University Center.
With the win over Nicholls (11-15, 5-10 Southland), the Lady Lions (14-15, 8-7 Southland) are assured their best conference record since the 2014 season and their best overall record since the 2004 season.
Dropping the opening set by two points, Southeastern bounced back to claim the next two sets by a pair of points each. The Lady Lions left little doubt in the final set, pulling away behind a dominating offensive performance by
Caroline Golden.
A junior from Mandeville, Louisiana, Golden established a career-high in kills for the second time in three matches. The match-high 22 kills also marks the third time in as many matches she has tallied 20-plus. Finishing off the all-around performance with 11 digs, Golden has now turned in a double-double in back-to-back matches.
Jodi Edo, a senior from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, continued her dominating play this season. Already pushing for All-Conference honors, Edo added 21 kills to the Lady Lions' offensive efforts. It marks the second time this month she has contributed 20-plus kills.
Edo, who leads the Southland Conference in solo blocks, ranks second in attack percentage (.342), fourth in total blocks (106) and fifth in total points (378), has posted the best attack percentage in school single-season history so far.
Baylee Laskoskie posted her 11th double-double of the season and third straight. The freshman setter from Spring, Texas handed out 51 assists and contributed 13 digs to the defensive effort. Laskoskie topped 50 assists for the third time in four matches, falling four shy of tying her career-best. She also served up a match-high three aces.
Sam Gomez, also a junior from Mandeville, had a hand in six of the Lady Lions' nine team blocks. Four of the blocks were solo.
Lizzy Low, a freshman from Lafayette, Louisiana, established a career-high with 26 digs to lead all players.
Jolie Hidalgo, also a freshman from Lafayette, chipped in 16 digs for the Lady Lions.
The single-elimination Southland tournament runs Nov. 22-24 on the campus of Central Arkansas in Conway, Arkansas. The Lady Lions can finish as high as fifth or as low as seventh in the conference standings. For more information on the tournament, visit www.LionSports.net/SLCvb.
