HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball team renews their in-state rivalry with Grambling State University Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at the University Center.

The Lions (1-1) picked up their first win under head coach David Kiefer Monday defeating Xavier University of Louisiana, 77-70. SLU led, 41-17, early in the second half before holding off a late rally from the Gold Rush. Freshman Nick Caldwell (F, 6-8, Geismar, Louisiana) led Southeastern with 15 points and five rebounds while sophomore Ty Brewer (F, 6-7, Meridian, Mississippi) added 12 points on 6-for-6 shooting.

As for Wednesday's game, Grambling (2-0) and SLU have played a couple of thrillers the last two seasons with neither finishing the way the Lions' wanted.

GSU rallied from 20 points behind against the SLU on Dec. 16, 2017 in Hammond to steal the win. SLU led 54-34 with under 14 minutes remaining before Grambling came all the way back highlighted by Drake Wilks' game-winning jumper with three seconds left.

The two teams matched up last year at Grambling on Dec. 19, 2018. The Lions, again, were in control for most of the night as they built a 14-point lead, 63-49, with 7:49 to go. However, the Tigers rallied back again and were able to snatch the victory from the Lions as GSU's Ivy Smith Jr. hit a pair of free throws with two seconds left to cap off a 19-4 run by the Tigers and give Grambling another 68-67 win. Despite the last two losses to the Tigers, SLU still leads the all-time series with GSU, 7-4.

Wednesday's game is also a Cane's Challenge.
