HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball team opens the home portion of the 2019-20 schedule Monday night when they host Xavier University of Louisiana at the University Center at 7 p.m.
Â
With Veteran's Day Monday, Southeastern would like to show its appreciation to local heroes and the men and women who serve our country. If you have a valid military service or unit member (police, EMT, Firefighter, etc.) ID, bring it to the ticket window prior to the game and receive two free tickets.
Â
The Lions (0-1) are looking to bounce back after a season-opening loss on the road at Tulane, 76-55. Sophomore
Ty Brewer led SLU recording his first career double-double. The Meridian, Mississippi native scored 17 points and snatched 14 rebounds, both career-highs. However, 21 turnovers were too much for the Lions to overcome.
Â
"I thought our youth was exposed a little bit (against Tulane)," said first-year SLU men's head basketball coach
David Kiefer. "But at the same time it's a marathon and not a sprint. We just have to get on the court and in the film room and get better. Our mental sweat is as important as our physical sweat with our youth."
Â
Monday's game is the start of a three-game home stand for the Lions. Southeastern will also host Grambling (2-0) Wednesday night at 7 p.m. and the University of Mobile Sunday at 1 p.m.
Â
"It'll be good to be at home in a familiar place," said Kiefer. "It'll be nice to be around our fans and get a chance to improve but our focus is only on Xavier right now."
Â
Xavier (4-2 in NAIA) enters Monday's contest coming off an 85-84 loss at home to Lemoyne-Owen Saturday. The Gold Rush, under third-year head coach Alfred Williams, are led by leading scorer from last season, Rayshawn Mart (6-3, G, Houma, Louisiana). The junior led the team with 12.3 points per game in the 2018-19 season. The Lions will also have to contend with William Lloyd (6-5, F, Baton Rouge, Louisiana). The senior is coming off a 30-point performance Saturday.
Â
"They are kind of similar to us," said Kiefer. "They are really scrappy and they get after it defensively. They are very guard oriented but they have the big man (Lloyd) that could cause us some matchup problems."
Â
The Southeastern Sports Network will offer a free video stream of Monday's game. Tune in online at
www.LionSports.net or the Lions' Gameday Experience app for Android or iOS devices. Fans can also watch on Southeastern's YouTube channel (SLUathletics) with any mobile, tablet or smart TV device (e.g., Apple TV, Amazon Fire, Android TV and Roku).
