HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana Athletics and the Lion Leadership Institute have joined a Southland Conference initiative inspired by NCAA Diversity and Inclusion Week, expanding leadership opportunities with the creation of two graduate assistant positions focused on athletics administration.
"A diverse mix of voices leads to better discussion, decisions and outcomes for everyone," Southeastern Director of Athletics
Jay Artigues said. "These positions create the potential for exciting opportunities for our student-athletes through the Lion Leadership Institute. Anytime you can 'grow your own' and hire within, it says a lot. We have tremendous student-athletes here that bring excellent leadership abilities to the table. I look forward to working with them in the future."
The new graduate assistant positions will assist the athletic department in multiple areas, including administration, marketing, operations, sports information, student services and ticketing.
Interested individuals must be a current Southeastern student-athlete willing to seek a graduate degree in business, educational leadership, or health and kinesiology. Applications will be taken through May and the positions will be chosen by committee in June.
"I applaud Director of Athletics
Jay Artigues for starting this initiative," university president Dr. John Crain said. "We have great student-athletes from highly diverse backgrounds who are committed to Southeastern and our community. We hope that enhancing opportunities for more of these student-athletes to further their educational and professional development will encourage more of them to pursue careers as coaches and athletics administrators."
The #NCAAInclusion campaign is a platform for student-athletes, administrators, coaches and fans across the country to start the discussion, speak out on, and promote diversity and inclusion as key elements of student-athlete success. The goal of the annual campaign is to engage social media to create a dialogue on diversity and inclusion and to communicate the benefit of inclusive environments to the student-athlete experience.
