NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Ellie Williams scored the game-winning goal on a cross from
Amber Marinero in the 77
th minute as the Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team defeated Stephen F. Austin, 2-1, Sunday at the SFA Soccer Field.
The Lady Lions (3-11-1, 2-6-0 Southland) scored both goals in the second half to rally for the win keeping their Southland Conference Tournament chances alive.
The Lady Jacks (6-9, 3-5 Southland) got on the board in the 18
th minute when Katelyn Termini went one-on-one from midfield. The junior from Frisco, Texas took the shot from 25 yards out and drilled it into the top left corner of the net for her seventh goal of the season.
Following the goal, the Lady Lions seemed to be energized as they were relentless on the offensive attack for the remainder of the first half. SLU took five shots in the last 30 minutes of the half including five corner kicks leading to two shots on goal.
"We've faced a lot of adversity this year and I think that helped us today," said third-year SLU soccer head coach Chris McBride. "But I honestly think we played well the entire ninety minutes, not just after they scored. I thought it was by far the most complete game we played this year."
Early in the second half, SLU had a golden opportunity. Sophomore
Brogan Bernadas made a great pass to
Jamie Raines in the box. Raines, a sophomore, got the shot past the goalkeeper but the shot hit the post.
In the 53
rd minute, the Lady Lions' offensive aggression paid off. SLU's
Carla Cortina got it out wide to Marinero who found
Hitomi Konno open in front of the net and made a terrific pass to Bernadas wide open in the box. Bernadas, a Covington, Louisiana native, drilled it into the top right corner of the net tying the match at 1-1.
"All three of our forwards did a great job on that play," said McBride. "Carla, Amber, Hitomi and Brogan all did their job on that play and we capitalized off it."
Southeastern's determination shined brightly in the 77
th minute.
Mya Guillory opened the attack as she got out wide on the far side and played it Marinero. Marinero, a senior, played a great cross in front of the net. Williams, a freshman, was there to deflect it into the net to give the Lady Lions the lead. The goal was Williams' team-leading third of the season as SLU picked up the huge road win.
"It was another good play from the forwards," said McBride. "Our forwards, once again, did a great job of creating space and attacking the box and then Ellie finished it off.
Bernadas led the Lady Lions with four shots and a goal. Marinero had an assist and two shots while Raines had three shots.
Freshman goalkeeper
Sophie Wendt, making her second straight start and third of her career, had five saves.
