BATON ROUGE, La. – Southeastern Louisiana fell Tuesday in heartbreaking fashion at Southern as the Lady Jaguars pulled away in the fifth and final set for the win, 25-21, 20-25, 25-23, 21-25, 15-6, at Clifford Seymour Gym.
 
Southern (1-8) rebounded to knock off the Lady Lions (1-10), who defeated the Lady Jags earlier this season in four sets, Aug. 25, at the Troy Invitational in Troy, Alabama
 
In the first set, Southern jumped out to an early 4-0 lead. The Lady Lions clawed back to tie it, 17-17, scoring four consecutive points off Southern errors. Righting the ship, the Lady Jags pulled away to claim the initial set.
 
Southeastern bounced back to take the second set and even up the match, pulling ahead for good, 13-12, on a kill by Jo Simovic (Gonrnji Milanovac, Serbia). The Lady Lions led the third set, 23-21, following a kill by Caroline Golden (Mandeville, Louisiana), but three-straight errors by Southeastern gave the Lady Jags the lead at set point.
 
The Lady Lions rebounded from the setback to tie up the match once again, forcing a fifth and deciding set. Tied, 18-18, an attack error by Southern put the Lady Lions up for good in the set.
 
Southern jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the final set and never looked back.
 
The match was the first game action for the Lady Lions since falling to Tulane in straight sets, 25-14, 25-12, 25-10, Sept. 11 at the University Center.
 
NOTES

• Elyssa Purcell (Alvin, Texas) led Southeastern with 11 kills and had a hand in four of the team's six blocks. Golden chipped in seven kills.
• Haley Baker (Elkton, Maryland) dished out 20 assists while Michelle Mirarchi (Plano, Texas) handed out another nine and served up a team-leading three aces.
• Lexie Torres (San Antonio, Texas) picked up a team-leading 13 digs. Golden contributed 11 more to the defensive effort.
• For Southern, Shelby Jolly led three players in double-digit kills with 17. Vaterra Calais turned in a double-double performance, leading the Lady Jags in both assists (33) and digs (14).

 
UP NEXT
Southeastern returns to the court again Saturday at 1 p.m. in the University Center, opening Southland Conference play at home against Incarnate Word. Admission is free and fans are asked to enter the arena down the ramp at Gate 3. Volleyball posters, magnet schedules and roster sheets will be available in the Fan Zone.
