Lions Achieve Milestones in Win at UIW

    SAN ANTONIO, Texas – It was a night of milestones for Southeastern Louisiana in an 86-68 Southland Conference win over UIW in the McDermott Center Wednesday night.

    The Lions (15-10, 9-3 Southland) won their seventh road game of the season for the first time since 2004-05. Southeastern is 5-1 on the road in Southland play.

    Senior guard Joshua Filmore tied a career-high with seven 3-pointers in finishing with a team-high 21 points. He also moved into second place on the Southeastern career list with his 199th career 3.

    Junior guard Marlain Veal had 17 points in becoming the 18th Lion with 1,000 career points. He also set a career high with 12 assists. He moved into fourth place on the Southeastern list with 155 assists and into a tie for seventh with Ricky Woods (2004-05) with 56 steals in 2017-18. The Lions had 18 assists while recording a season-low six turnovers.

    Senior forward Jordan Capps added 15 points while junior forward Moses Greenwood tossed in another 14. Southeastern shot 50 percent from the field and made 13 3-pointers.

    Senior guard Keith Charleston tied a career high with 11 rebounds for the second straight game.

    Charles Brown III had a game-high 26 points and a team-best eight rebounds for UIW (5-16, 0-11) which lost its 13th straight game. Shawn Johnson added 23 points. The Cardinals shot 36.7 percent overall and out-rebounded the Lions, 39-36.

    Southeastern used a 7-0 run to start the second half after leading 40-37 at the break. Filmore hit a pair of 3s and Charleston added a free throw to give the Lions a 47-37 lead at the 17:43 mark. After Brown hit a jumper at the 16:25 mark, Southeastern went on a 12-2 run over the next, taking a 61-43 lead on a Capps 3 with 11:53 left. The Lions took their biggest lead at 77-44 on a three-point play by senior guard Quinton Thomas with 5:46 left.

    There were 21 lead changes and seven ties in the first half. UIW took its biggest lead at 30-26 on two Johnson free throws at the 5:09 mark. A Brown layup gave the Cardinals their final lead at 34-32 with 3:01 left. After two more ties, Filmore gave the Lions the lead for good with a 3 with 33 seconds remaining.
 
NOTES
    Southeastern now leads the series with UIW, 4-1. The Lions are 2-0 in San Antonio.
   
    It was the second straight game and the eighth time this season Southeastern has scored 80-plus points. The Lions are now 27-1 when scoring at least 80 points in Jay Ladner's three-plus seasons as head coach.
 
    Veal's 12 assists are the most by a Lion since Zay Jackson had 12 against New Orleans on Feb. 24, 2016.
 
    Filmore's seven 3s are tied for the fourth most in school history. He also hit seven against Houston Baptist last month and against Tennessee Tech in 2014.

    Southeastern will look to avenge an earlier 71-62 loss at home to McNeese when the Lions travel to Lake Charles Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. tip-off.
