Gold Nuggets Snap SLU Win Streak

Lady Lions (4-2) off for final exams, return to court Dec. 12 at Louisiana Tech

HAMMOND, La. – Xavier (La.) forced Southeastern Louisiana into its poorest shooting season of the 2018-19 season, snapping the Lady Lions' four-game winning streak with a 59-47 upset of SLU in non-conference women's basketball action Friday night at the University Center.

The Lady Lions (4-2) could not ever get going offensively, as the visitors held SLU to 28.8 percent (15-for-52) field-goal shooting. The Gold Nuggets improved to 8-3 overall with the victory, preventing Southeastern from starting the season 5-1 for the first time since the 1988-89 season.

Jaclyn Scholvin led SLU with a game-high 13 points. The Mandeville, Louisiana native was the lone Southeastern player in double figures, as Charliee Dugas and Celica Sterling added nine points each off the bench.

Cailtyn Williams paced Southeastern with a team-high 11 rebounds and three blocked shots.

Mikayla Bates led three Gold Nuggets in double figures with 12 points. Gina Smith came off the bench with a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds, while Jas Hill added 11 points as well for XULA.

Neither team could buy a bucket in the first quarter, as Southeastern held a 13-10 lead after the opening 10 minutes. Xavier got hot from outside the arc in the opening minutes of the second quarter. Behind four second-quarter threes, the Gold Nuggets took a 29-24 advantage into the break.

The Gold Nuggets would stretch their lead to as many as 12 in the third quarter, as Southeastern shot 21.1 percent (4-for-19) from the floor. Tyler Morrison netted a 30-foot shot to cut the lead to nine heading into the final quarter.

SLU cut the lead to six on a Dugas layup in the opening minute of the final quarter. However, the Gold Nuggets answered with an 8-2 run that Nahrie Pierce capped with a pair of free throws that extended the advantage to 51-39 with 5:17 remaining. Southeastern would get no closer than 10 the rest of the way.

Following a break for finals, Southeastern will travel to Louisiana Tech on Dec. 12 for a 6:30 p.m. non-conference contest in Ruston.
