HAMMOND, La. – Flaring tempers added a little drama to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's win over Southeastern, 25-21, 25-22, 25-23, in Southland Conference action Thursday at the University Center.
The first set established a gritty tempo for the match as the Lady Lions (2-23, 1-11 Southland) and A&M-Corpus Christi (8-18, 7-6 Southland) endured tie scores 16 different times. The lead changed hands six times and both head coaches were issued red cards following separate disagreements with the officials in the initial set.
Jodi Edo, a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, led all players with 12 kills. Redshirt junior
Elyssa Purcell added 11 more to the Lady Lions' offensive effort and
Sam Gomez, a sophomore from Mandeville, Louisiana, recorded a season-high nine kills.
Amanda Caluda, a freshman defensive specialist from Slidell, Louisiana, served up two of Southeastern's four aces in the match.
Michelle Mirarchi (19 assists) and
Haley Baker (18 assists), who split setting duties for the Lady Lions, each contributed one service ace.
Lexie Torres (19),
Caroline Golden (13) and Caluda (11) each turned in double-digit dig totals.
UP NEXT
Southeastern finishes out its final homestand of the season with a 10 a.m. Senior Day match Saturday against Houston Baptist (12-14, 5-7 Southland).
Before Saturday's contest, Baker (Elkton, Maryland), Purcell (Alvin, Texas) and Torres (San Antonio, Texas) will be honored for their contributions to the program.
Admission to the match is free and fans are asked to enter the arena down the ramp at Gate 3. Volleyball posters and magnet schedules will be available in the Fan Zone.
