Capps, Filmore Lead Lions Past HBU

HAMMOND, La. – Senior forward Jordan Capps poured in a career-high 31 points to lead Southeastern Louisiana to a 85-69 Southland Conference victory over Houston Baptist Wednesday night in the University Center.

Capps was 12-of-18 from the field and 6-of-9 from the line in becoming the first Lion to score 30 points since Cedric Jenkins had 37 at New Orleans on March 5, 2015.

Senior guard Joshua Filmore tied a career-high with seven 3-pointers in adding 22 points for Southeastern (11-8, 5-1 Southland). Junior guard Marlain Veal contributed 10 assists, five steals and eight rebounds while senior forward James Currington had eight rebounds and nine points. The Lions shot 53.4 percent from the field and out-rebounded HBU, 37-32.

Ian DuBose led HBU (4-15, 0-6 Southland) with 17 points. Jalon Gates and Braxton Bonds with 13 points each and David Caraher with 10 were also in double figures for the Huskies who shot 40.3 percent from the field.

HBU took a 43-40 lead on a three-point play by Edward Hardt with 18:14 remaining. Southeastern countered with a 12-0 run over the next three and half minutes with Currington scoring off a Capps rebound to give the Lions a 44-43 lead with 17:07 left. Filmore buried 3s on consecutive possessions to make it 54-45 at the 13:52 mark.

Another Filmore 3 gave Southeastern a 67-55 lead with 8:26 left. A three-point play by DuBose and a Caraher 3 cut the margin to 67-61 with 7:46 remaining. But Capps responded with a layup, Filmore hit a 3 and Capps dunked following a steal by Veal to extend the lead to 76-61 at the 5:53 mark. HBU got no closer than 14 the rest of the way.

Caraher, DuBose and Gates all hit 3s to give HBU an 11-3 at the 17:17 mark of the first half. A putback by Caraher made it 15-9 with 15:05 left in the half.

Southeastern came back with an 8-0 run, using a tap-in and a jumper by junior forward Moses Greenwood and a 3 from the right corner by senior guard Jabbar Singleton  to take a 17-15 lead with 12:58 remaining.

After the Huskies tied it at 21 on a Philip McKenzie layup, Veal hit two free throws, then found Currington inside for a 25-21 lead at the 6:12 mark. A three-point play by Capps gave the Lions their biggest lead of the half at 32-24 with 4:14 left. A McKenzie tied it at 34 with 2:20 remaining. But Capps knocked down a 3 from the right wing, then dunked in a putback as Southeastern took a 39-38 lead into the half.

NOTES:
Southeastern took a 6-5 lead in its series with HBU with its second-straight win over the Huskies. The Lions are now 5-0 at home against HBU.

Capps eclipsed his previous career high of 29 points against Northwestern State on Feb. 29, 2016.

Filmore also had seven 3-pointers against Tennessee Tech on Dec. 22, 2014. He became the first Lion with seven 3s since Filmore at Nicholls State on Feb. 25, 2017.

QUOTES:
Southeastern head coach Jay Ladner:
"I thought offensively we were in a pretty good rhythm in the first half. It was real good to see both Jordan and Josh, neither one of them have had good offensive games recently, (do what they did). Josh really struggled the last game (against McNeese). That wasn't typical of him but good players bounce back after those type of performances. We really it and I thought especially in the second half it really blew the game open.
"Obviously Jordan had 31 and when he is locked in and being active, he has a chance to do that every night. The ball is in his court. Those two guys came through tonight and we needed it. It was good they led us back."

UP NEXT:
