NSU Duo Sends Lady Demons Past SLU, 89-71

Underwood scores 23 in loss

NATCHITOCHES, La. – Northwestern State's Cheyenne Brown and Beatrice Attura scored 30 points each to lead the Lady Demons to an 89-71 victory over Southeastern Louisiana in Southland Conference women's basketball action Thursday evening at Prather Coliseum.

Southeastern (5-20, 3-11 Southland) was able to keep within striking distance for the majority of the game thanks to nine three-point field goals and scoring 29 points off 21 Lady Demon turnovers. However, NSU (12-12, 6-7 Southland) finished with a 42-21 rebounding advantage and made 25-of-27 free throws.

Junior guard Taylin Underwood led Southeastern with 23 points – her 13th game with 20 or more points this season. The Livingston, Louisiana native made five three-point field goals to move into a tie for second place on the school's career list with former Lady Lion Chelsea Hix (2007-11) with 159 three-pointers made.

With four games remaining, Underwood needs 47 points to become the 20th student-athlete in program history to reach 1,000 career points. Underwood was joined in double figures by junior guard Bre Warren, who netted 11 points off the bench.

Southeastern finished with 18 assists in the game, led by sophomore guard Ashailee Brailey's four. Brailey also led SLU with four steals, as the Lady Lions finished with 12 as a team.

Attura and Brown were just too much for Southeastern to handle. Brown recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds, while Attura chipped in with a game-high seven assists. Libba Gilliam joined the Lady Demon leaders in double figures with 14 points to go with eight rebounds.

Southeastern led the majority of the first quarter, as sophomore forward Baylie Stears scored the game's first eight points in her first start of the season. However, NSU scored the final five points of the period and the teams went into the second quarter tied at 21-21.

Neither team could pull way for the majority of the second quarter, as a Warren basket tied the score at 29-29 with just under four minutes remaining. The Lady Demons closed the half with a 12-3 run to take a 41-32 lead into the halftime break.

Southeastern opened the half on a 10-5 run and a short jumper by Morrison cut the lead to 46-42 with just under five minutes left in the third quarter. NSU answered by scoring the next nine points and outscored SLU, 18-8, the rest of the quarter to take a 64-50 advantage into the final quarter.

Northwestern State scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to stretch the lead to 21, but Underwood scored 10 straight points during a 12-2 run that cut the lead to 11 with 5:17 left.

That would be as close as Southeastern would get, as Northwestern State grew the lead to as many as 19 down the stretch on the way to an 18-point final margin.

Southeastern will return home to host Stephen F. Austin (19-5, 10-3 Southland), which lost 80-73 to Abilene Christian Thursday night, for a 3 p.m. Southland Conference contest Saturday afternoon in the University Center. Saturday is Senior Day and senior forward Chey Stewart will be honored prior to the game.

Stewart is also Saturday's Spotlight Player of the Game. The first 150 fans will receive a free trading card featuring the Wylie, Texas native courtesy of PRIDE.

Saturday's game can be heard live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9), online at www.LionSports.net/listenlive and via the TuneIn Radio app. The Southeastern Channel will provide a free live video stream at http://www2.southeastern.edu/thesoutheasternchannel/lionslive.
