TCU Pulls Away from SLU With Second-Half Barrage

Teams combine for 30 three-point field goals in Sunday matinee

FORT WORTH, Texas – After a back-and-forth first half that featured five lead changes and three ties, TCU used a record-breaking shooting performance to pull away for a 112-62 non-conference victory over Southeastern Louisiana in women's basketball action Sunday afternoon at Schollmaier Arena.
 
TCU (7-2) netted a single-game school record 18 three-point field goals and outscored SLU (1-7), 62-17, in the second half. The two teams combined for 30 treys in the contest, as the Lady Lions netted 10 of their season-high 12 three-point field goals during a highly-competitive first half.
 
Senior guard Taylin Underwood led Southeastern with 18 points and six rebounds and was joined in double figures by freshman wing Morgan Carrier, who netted 11 points all in the first half.
 
Freshman forward Caitlyn Williams, junior forward Jyar Francis and sophomore guard Charliee Dugas added seven points apiece for the Lady Lions. Sophomore guard Tyler Morrison dished out six assists, while Underwood and sophomore guard Courtney Dawsey were credited with three dimes each.
 
Sophomore guard Amber Ramirez made a single-game school record 11 three-point field goals to lead TCU with 33 points. Ramirez was joined in double figures by junior forward Amy Okonkwo (15 points), senior guard Toree Thompson (11), junior center Jordan Moore (10) and freshman guard Lauren Heard (10).
 
Howard posted a double-double with a game-high 12 rebounds, as the Horned Frogs finished with a 54-32 rebounding advantage behind the efforts of Howard and senior guard Sydney Coleman (11 rebounds). Heard dished out a team-high six assists for TCU, as the Horned Frogs were credited with 32 assists on their 39 made field goals.
 
TCU shot 63.2 percent (12-19) from the floor in the first quarter to take a 30-22 lead after the initial 10 minutes. Southeastern responded with its best quarter of play of the young season. Underwood netted three treys to fuel a 14-5 run that put the Lady Lions up, 41-40, with 3:54 left in the first half.
 
TCU closed the half with a 10-4 run and a three by Thompson sent the Horned Frogs into the break with a 50-45 advantage.
 
The second half was all Frogs. Underwood swooped to the basket to cut the TCU lead to 55-49 with 7:32 left in the third quarter. TCU answered with a 22-2 run capped by a Ramirez trey that gave TCU a 77-51 lead with just under two minutes left in the period.
 
TCU went into the final quarter with a 81-53 lead and promptly scored the first seven points of the final period. SLU would get no closer than 32 the rest of the way.
 
Southeastern will now return home for the first time since the Nov. 10 regular season opener versus Alcorn State. The Lady Lions will host UL Lafayette at 7 p.m. in the University Center on Wednesday.  
 
The game will be televised live by the award-winning Southeastern Channel and streamed on the Southland Digital Network at www.Southland.org/live. Cox Sports Television will replay the game on Thursday, Dec. 14 at 12 p.m. The game can also be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9), online at www.LionSports.net/listenlive and via the TuneIn Radio app.
 
Wednesday will also be Academy Youth Night as all fans ages 12 and under will receive free admission, while fans presenting a valid local school ID from their middle, junior high or high school will receive admission for $3. Southeastern Athletics Marketing and Promotions will also be giving out Southeastern paraphernalia courtesy of Academy Sports and Outdoors.
 
For Wednesday's game and the remaining home basketball games in December, fans are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to contribute to the donation from the Southeastern Athletics Ticket Office and the Southeastern Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). All items will be given to the Tangi Food Pantry.
 
Wednesday will also be a Cane's Challenge game. If the Lady Lions score 50 points or more, fans can take their game ticket or student coupon to their local participating Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers by the end of business the next day to receive a free combo with the purchase of another of equal or greater value.
 
Dugas will also be Wednesday's Spotlight Player of the Game. The first 150 fans will receive a free trading card featuring the Rayne, Louisiana native courtesy of PRIDE.
