Louisiana-Lafayette Scores Late to Top Lady Lions, 3-1

LAFAYETTE, La. – Annika Schmidt scored a pair of goals, the second coming with less than six minutes remaining, to lift Louisiana-Lafayette to a 3-1 non-conference win over Southeastern Louisiana at the Ragin' Cajuns Soccer/Track Facility Sunday night.

Southeastern (2-3-1) had taken a 1-0 lead on junior Maggie Ramsey's team-leading third goal of the season early in the second half. Senior Casey Peacock had her first assist of the year on the goal. Senior goalkeeper Hope Sabadash made six saves to move into third place on the Lady Lions' career list with 314, passing Nicole Helmig who had 312 from 2000-03.

Schmidt scored her second and third goals of the season for ULL (3-3). MacKenzie Higgins added her team-high sixth goal of the year in the final minute. Erika Sierra recorded a pair of assists while goalkeeper Cosette Morche had one. Morche also made four saves.

"I thought we played a very good first half," Southeastern Louisiana head coach Blake Hornbuckle said. "We came out in the second half and scored a very nice goal to go up. They got a goal and scored late and we pressed and they got another one with about 30 seconds left. But I'm proud of our team's effort to stay in there and fight."

Schmidt scored the eventual game winner with 84:14 after taking a short pass from the right side from Sierra.

Morche kept ULL ahead with a save against senior Marisa Rodrigues with 52 seconds remaining. Higgins then put the match away after deflecting in a shot off Sabadash, making it 3-1 at the 89:35 mark.

Following a scoreless first half, Ramsey got Southeastern on the board following a direct kick by Peacock at the 49:33 mark.

Morche saved another shot by Ramsey 1:33 later. Sabadash countered with a save on an attempt by Yazmin Montoya at 59:37. But Schmidt then lofted a shot over Sabadash on a breakaway following passes by Morche and Sierra, tying the match at 1 at the 60:24 mark.

Sabadash saved a shot by Sarah Kozlowski at 61:34, then stopped an attempt by Natalie Newman five minutes later. After Newman had a shot blocked, Sabadash saved Sierra's rebound attempt at the 69:32 mark. The Lady Lions blocked another attempt by Carly Ellender at 75:38.

Morche stopped a shot by Ramsey at 78:49 before Sabadash came up with another save against Sierra a minute later.

Southeastern got off the first shot of the match when sophomore Christina Cutura sent a header off a corner from Ramsey wide at the 10:44 mark. ULL's Celine Rumpf sent a header wide before Southeastern freshman Linda Karlsson did likewise at the 16:23 mark. Whitney Taggart sent a shot high for the Ragin' Cajuns at 25:07.

Morche saved an attempt by senior Lauren Lorentz at the 27:54 mark. ULL then went on the attack with Ellender having a shot blocked at 29:43. Kozlowski missed high before Sabadash saved an attempt by Higgins. Montoya had another shot blocked at the 32:35 mark.

Southeastern will travel to Baton Rouge Thursday to face another in-state rival, Southern, at 7 p.m.
