UIW Scores Twice in Second Half to Edge Lady Lions

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana sophomore Payton Colson scored her first collegiate goal but Incarnate Word netted a pair of goals in a four-minute span in the second half to take a 2-1 Southland Conference victory Friday night.

Colson scored off a deflection late in the first half to give Southeastern (4-5-1, 1-1-0 Southland) a 1-0 lead. She finished with a team-high three shots, all on goal. Senior Casey Peacock had her team-high third assist. Senior goalkeeper Hope Sabadash made five saves while facing 16 shots.

"We did a good job in the first half of putting pressure on the back line and created a goal," Southeastern head coach Blake Hornbuckle said. In the second half, we had some opportunities in front of the goal and couldn't find the net."

Incarnate Word (2-5-1, 1-1-0) picked up its first win over the Lady Lions in four tries. Sophomore Sam Batley scored her first two goals of the season while taking three shots on goal. Freshman Brooke Hanson had her first assist of the year. Sophomore Sydney Huntsinger and junior Haley Nelson each played a half in net. Nelson played the final 45 minutes, making four saves while facing six shots. Huntsinger allowed a goal and made one save on four shots faced.

Southeastern broke through in the 31st minute after Huntsinger had a clearing pass deflect off Peacock. Colson converted the turnover, giving the Lady Lions a 1-0 lead.
Sabadash saved a shot by Hanson but sophomore Christina Cutura was called for a foul in the box in the 55th minute. Batley converted the penalty kick, tying the match at 1.

Cutura sent a header wide in the 57th minute. UIW then countered with Batley knocking in the rebound from 15 yards out after Hanson hit the crossbar, putting the Cardinals up 2-1 in the 59th minute.

Nelson saved shots by freshman Amber Marinero and sophomore Vanessa Arzaluz between the 70th- and 80th-minute marks. Junior Maddie Kresevic then missed wide in the 81st minute.

Nelson saved a header by Colson in the final seconds to preserve the win.

Sabadash saved a shot by junior Karey Tylman in the 15th minute of the match. After senior Abigail Koenigs had a shot blocked, Tylman missed wide in the 21st minute.

The UIW defense blocked a shot by Marinero in the 25th minute before Sabadash saved a header by sophomore Shelbi Miller in the 30th minute. Koenigs had a shot blocked, then sent the rebound wide in the 34th minute.

Huntsinger saved another shot by Colson in the 42nd minute. Junior Kim Porche then missed wide after taking a corner from Arzaluz in the final seconds of the opening half.
