Lady Lions Fall to Georgia State in Non-Conference Finale

Story Links

HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana senior goalkeeper Hope Sabadash continued to move up the program's career saves list against Georgia State Sunday afternoon but the Panthers netted a goal in each half for a 2-0 non-conference win in Strawberry Stadium.

Sabadash recorded seven saves, giving her 324 for her career to pass Lacey Bockhaus who had 319 from 2008-12. She now trails just Allison Holladay who had 351 from 1997-99.

Sophomore Payton Colson had three shots, two on goal while sophomore Christina Cutura put a pair of shots on goal for Southeastern (3-4-1).

Erin Rhodes and Kylie Ruffule scored for Georgia State (3-2-2). Alexis Thomas and Caitlin Ray had an assist apiece. Brie Haynes made nine saves.

Georgia State took a 1-0 lead when Thomas sent a through ball to Rhodes. Rhodes charged into the box and angled it left past Sabadash for her first goal of the season at the 10:19 mark.

The Panthers made it 2-0 at the 46:13 mark of the second half when Ruffule scored her first goal of the season off a cross from Ray from the right side.

Haynes grabbed a shot by freshman Amber Marinero at the 47:45 mark. Two minutes later, senior Amber Lasher missed wide with an attempt. Haynes then saved another try by Lasher at the 54:25 mark.

Sabadash denied a shot by Ray at 55:58. Southeastern then went on the attack with Haynes saving a shot by junior Lauren Babcock before senior Lauren Lorentz missed high at the 64:58 mark.

Ruffule nearly made it 3-0 when her shot from in front went just wide of the right post at the 66:32 mark. A minute and a half later, Haynes saved a header by freshman Linda Karlsson, then grabbed a shot by Colson at the 71:26 mark. Marinero was high on a header off a corner kick by Babcock with less than nine minutes left. Colson then took a pass from sophomore Vanessa Arzaluz in front but had her shot sail high at the 87:16 mark.

The teams had to withstand a pair of lightning delays late in the first half. Southeastern had an early opportunity following a handball in the box by Georgia State. Senior Casey Peacock took the penalty kick but had it sail high at the 42:35 mark.

Brooke Shank lined a shot in to Sabadash after taking a through ball from Ruffule at the 26:21 mark. Sabadash then dove to snare an attempt in front by Ruffule following a pass by Ray with 23:44 left in the half. Haynes grabbed a pair of shots by Cutura over the next six minutes.

After a corner kick by Babcock was knocked around the box, Colson headed in a shot at the right post but had it saved by Haynes at the 4:38 mark.

Following a 35-minute lightning delay with 3:53 left, Sabadash saved a shot by Rhodes off a corner by Mikella Rodriguez with 10 seconds remaining in the half. There was another 30-minute delay during the half.

"I thought (junior) Maddie Kresevic worked extremely hard today along with Vanessa Arzaluz," Southeastern head coach Blake Hornbuckle said. "Hope Sabadash was very good today with her communication and distribution. I thought Sofia Olsson and Linda Karlsson also worked very hard today. We were unable to connect in front of the goal but if we put one or two in, it opens the game up."

Southeastern opens Southland Conference play against McNeese Friday at 7 p.m. in Strawberry Stadium. The match will be the Lady Lions' Faculty Appreciation Night. Members of the team have invited out faculty members to show their appreciation and be presented before the match.
