JACKSON, Miss. –
Maggie Ramsey scored a pair of goals as Southeastern Louisiana came away with a 2-0 non-conference victory over Jackson State at the JSU Soccer Complex Sunday afternoon.
Ramsey scored in each half for her first two goals of the season.
Maddie Kresevic had an assist while
Hope Sabadash made four saves for the Lady Lions (1-1).
Faith Toennies had 14 saves for Jackson State (0-1).
"We know going in to play Jackson State they are going to be athletic, they are always going to be organized and they are always going to work hard," Southeastern head coach
Blake Hornbuckle said. "It was an absolute battle today. I'm proud of our team for stepping up and finding the pathway to the goal and finishing."
Southeastern controlled possession for the majority of the half, out-shooting the Lady Tigers 16-1. Toennies dove to her right to punch away an attempt by
Linda Karlsson at the 21:08 mark, one of her nine saves in the half.
Southeastern broke the stalemate with 2:58 left in the half when Ramsey took a through ball from Kresevic, slipped past Toennies and tapped in the shot in front of the net.
An offsides call against the Lady Lions negated a goal by
Christina Cutura with 48:28 left in the match. Jackson State then threatened at the 57:22 mark as Jalah Carter had a shot in front blocked. Alexandria Astorga followed but also had her shot blocked, keeping Southeastern ahead.
Ramsey made it 2-0 at the 72:10 mark after weaving into the box and lining a shot past Toennies.
Sabadash preserved the shutout after knocking down a shot by Rhae'ven Ellis in front of the net, then diving to her left to deflect away an attempt by Jolene Ceniceros before the Lady Lions were able to clear the ball at the 78:52 mark.
"I think
Hope Sabadash had a wonderful day in goal," Hornbuckle said. "Late in the game she did make a nice double-save to help us preserve the shutout.
Maggie Ramsey had a wonderful day in the midfield generating opportunities and getting our two goals."
Southeastern will hold its home opener against Arkansas State Thursday at 4 p.m. at the Southeastern Soccer Complex.
